GetCoattail Research — The Filing Tape #193. Deckers Outdoor through six filing lenses, as of the latest filings. Past patterns are not a promise of future results. For education only — not investment advice.
The Hype
Deckers Outdoor Corporation (DECK) appears on AltIndex's "Trending Meme Stocks" list, last updated October 25, 2026 at 6:55 AM Pacific, with 17 Reddit mentions in 24 hours, a +466.7% mention change, Bullish sentiment, and a listed price of $81.09. AltIndex's own "Today's notable meme stocks" section singles the name out: "Deckers Outdoor alone is up 467% in the last 24 hours" — mention volume, not price. This package cites no earnings release, contract, or other news event for Deckers: the attention claim rests on that listing plus the measured price tape, and nothing else.
The price tape behind the attention is a fall, not a run. DECK closed 2025 at $103.67, slipped 0.8% in Q2 to $99.29 by June 30, 2026, fell to $78.14 by September 30, and closed the price file on October 2 at $79.12 — 20.3% below its June 30 close and 23.7% below its 2025 year-end close. The October 23 close in our chart data is $81.09 — the same figure AltIndex lists — 2.5% above the October 2 close but still 18.3% below June 30 and 33.7% below the $122.29 52-week-high field. The question the filings let us ask: what did the tracked holders, the broad market, the company's insiders, and Congress actually do?

Chart: Deckers Outdoor through six filing lenses — who is actually there?
Superinvestors. The tracked register for Deckers is small, concentrated, and unanimous in direction — but small is the operative word. Three of 147 tracked managers hold 1,236,438 shares — $122,765,929 reported — and all three added in Q2. Christopher Bloomstran's Semper Augustus holds 670,199 shares, 54.2% of the cohort and 7.52% of its portfolio, after increasing 1.4% in Q2, from 661,029 shares, a gain of 9,170 shares. David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital holds 506,398 shares (41.0% of the cohort, 1.29% of its portfolio) after increasing 5.2% in Q2, from 481,398 shares, a gain of 25,000 shares. Thornburg Investment Management holds 59,841 shares (4.8%, 0.06%) after increasing 17.6% in Q2, from 50,889 shares, a gain of 8,952 shares. All three Q1-to-Q2 changes verify exactly under both pairing methods, and both registers reconcile with residual zero: the verified cohort moved from 1,193,316 shares in Q1 to 1,236,438 in Q2, +43,122 shares, +3.6%. The cohort's implied price ($99.29) matches the June 30 close ($99.29) exactly, holder by holder. The cohort is 0.94% of the full market's reported shares and 0.91% of shares outstanding — and Semper Augustus alone is 0.49% of shares outstanding. All institutions. The broad market added shares much faster than the tracked cohort, and added names too. Filers rose by 10 to 863, of which 859 are long, while reported shares rose 14.03% (+16,248,704 shares to 132,076,283). Reported value rose 12.42% to $13.12 billion. Underneath, 777 filers entered and 767 exited, net +10. Excluding the tracked cohort, other institutions hold 130,839,845 shares — so the broad market's Q2 addition (+16.25 million shares) is more than thirteen times the entire tracked stake.
Insiders. This lens is quiet in the window that matters most, and one-sided over every longer window — with the buying side nearly empty. In the 90 days to October 2, 2026, insiders filed 23 forms with 0 buys and 0 sells — but the window is not filing-empty: those filings contain 23 code-A grants at $0.00 and 7 code-F transactions, none of them an open-market purchase or sale, so the 90-day open-market count is zero on both sides. Over one year: 0 buys, 5 sells — 10,552 shares sold for $1,167,461.88, from 4 sellers, 4 of them officer sales. Across the whole corpus: 1 buy, 22 sells — 1,825 shares bought for $200,319.30 against 42,696 shares sold for $5,395,575.52, from 1 buyer and 6 sellers, across 118 filings.
The year's five sells, in full: Angela Ogbechie (Chief Supply Chain Officer) sold 504 shares at $81.00 and 956 shares at $81.68, both on October 31, 2025; Anne Spangenberg (President, Fashion Lifestyle) sold 4,063 shares at $116.02 on February 13, 2026; Robin Spring-Green (President, Hoka) sold 347 shares at $113.78 on February 13, 2026; and Lauri M. Shanahan (flagged as a non-officer in the parsed records) sold 4,682 shares at $114.84 on February 13, 2026 — the largest one-year sale and the last open-market insider sale in the corpus. No open-market insider purchase or sale appears after February 13, 2026 through October 2, 2026. The single buy in the entire record is Cindy L. Davis (flagged as a non-officer), 1,825 shares at $109.764 on June 6, 2025. Officer buys are zero in every window; officer sells are 4 in the year window and 8 in the full record. The site's insider aggregate file has no DECK row at all (as of October 25), so no site 90-day comparison exists; the figures here rest on the parsed-file scan, which matches the aggregate bucket exactly.
Congress. This lens is blank, with its coverage stated rather than smoothed over. The combined, House, and Senate aggregates and the members file contain no DECK rows at all — no buys, no sells, no attributed member. The members file covers House periodic transaction reports for 2026 with transactions dated on or after April 1, 2026, and the Senate file is as of October 1, 2026, so the correct statement is that no congressional transaction was found in the covered disclosures — not that no member ever traded the stock. Congress disclosures are member filings, not Form 4 insider transactions, and are never added to insider totals.
13D/G. The control register is passive-only, and its largest position shrank by more than two-thirds. It holds 6 filings — 1 initial Schedule 13G and 5 amendments — and no Schedule 13D filing at all. The largest reported percent is FMR LLC at 13.8% (20,451,734.98 shares, event September 30, 2025, filed November 5, 2025; Abigail P. Johnson reports the same shares and percent jointly, and joint positions are not summed). FMR then fell to 6.9% (event December 31, 2025) and to 4.3% (6,132,516.59 shares, event March 31, 2026) in the register's latest filing, dated May 6, 2026. The Vanguard Group filed a 0-share amendment at 0.0% (event March 13, 2026, filed March 26, 2026). Vanguard Capital Management reported 7.5% (event March 31, 2026, filed April 29, 2026). The register's cross-date total (98,419,894.18) counts each joint position once per reporting entity across different dates, so it is never quoted as an economic figure.
Short interest. The bear position did not just grow over the year — it closed the series at its highest point. FINRA short interest stood at 9,457,002 shares at September 15, 2026, with 2.95 days to cover and 6.93% of the 136,414,227 shares outstanding (a July 9, 2026 count). That is 6.06% above the prior settlement (8,916,921 at August 31), 44.2% above June 30 (6,559,671), and 26.3% above the year-ago figure (7,485,407) — and it is the maximum of all 137 settlements in the series, ahead of 9,053,093 on August 15, 2025. The last five settlements trace a steady climb: 5,839,678 (July 15), 6,356,844 (July 31), 7,855,969 (August 14), 8,916,921 (August 31), 9,457,002 (September 15). One caveat: the series carries a stock-split flag on the September 30, 2024 settlement, where shares short step 6.069× across the 6-for-1 split, so pre-split settlements are in pre-split share units. The peak claim survives that caveat — the largest pre-split settlement, scaled by 6, is 8,453,634, still below 9,457,002 — and the latest settlement is also the maximum of the post-split settlements alone.
Chart: DECK short interest — 137 FINRA settlements, January 2021 to September 2026.
Fundamentals context. The fundamentals record is complete on the fields quoted here: shares outstanding 136,414,227 as of July 9, 2026; revenue $5,472,296,000, net income $1,024,071,000 and assets $3,687,765,000, all for FY2026. Recorded market capitalisation is $11,139,586,276.38, on the record's own price_close ($81.66 as of October 6, 2026), not the October 23 close.
The Gap
The attention and the filing tape disagree about what kind of story this is. A meme-stock listing puts Deckers in front of readers with a 467% mention spike, while the price sits 18.3% below June 30 on the latest close. The filings show that the entire tracked superinvestor presence is three holders totalling 0.91% of shares outstanding — unanimous in adding, but adding a combined 43,122 shares in a quarter when the broad market added 16.25 million — and that the company's own insiders recorded no open-market trades at all in the 90 days to October 2, no buys in a year, and exactly one buy in the whole parsed record, against a bear position that closed at its series peak. Against that quiet tracked picture, the passive register's largest holder cut its reported stake from 13.8% to 4.3%, and Congress recorded nothing in the covered disclosures. The tape does not show a tracked crowd piling in behind the mention spike; it shows a tiny tracked stake adding in small size, an insider register silent since February, and a bear position at its high.
What Would Change the Picture
Nothing above is a recommendation. It is a record. What would change it:
- 1. Q3 13F season (filings due by November 16, 2026). Watch whether Semper Augustus, Greenlight, and Thornburg add again — all three added in Q2, so a second straight quarter of additions, or any first tracked position from a fourth manager, is measurable against the three-holder base.
- 2. A first open-market insider trade after October 2, 2026. Any purchase would be only the second buy in the parsed record; any sale would end an open-market silence running since February 13, 2026.
- 3. A first Schedule 13D. Any activist filing would replace the passive-only register; an FMR move from 4.3% in either direction, or a Vanguard Capital Management move from 7.5%, would also change the largest passive positions.
- 4. A first Congress transaction in the covered disclosures, buy or sell, would break the blank congressional picture.
- 5. Short-interest direction. A fall back toward the June 30 level of 6,559,671 — or a further climb above the September 15 series peak of 9,457,002 — would each tell a different story about the bear position that ended the series at its high.
As-of & Limits
| Lens | As of | Limit or note |
|---|---|---|
| Superinvestors (13F) | Jun 30, 2026 | 13F figures are as of June 30, 2026, the quarter-end. Funds have up to 45 days after quarter-end to file, so this is the most recent complete picture — and it is always a lagging one. Common stock only (CUSIP 243537107); no option rows, no second class in the tracked file. All three Q1→Q2 changes verify exactly under both pairing methods; both registers reconcile with residual zero. No tracked holder is among the 3 early filers at September 30, 2026. |
| All institutions (13F) | Jun 30, 2026 | Reported value includes option rows by definition; implied price ($99.36 in Q2) is not a price check. Value rose more slowly than shares partly because the June close sits below the March close. |
| Insiders (Form 4) | Oct 2, 2026 | "Zero buys/sells in 90 days" means zero open-market (P/S) transactions in the stated window, across the parsed corpus for issuer CIK 910521 (118 filings, filing-date span February 7, 2025 – September 2, 2026). The 23 filings in the window contain 23 code-A grants and 7 code-F transactions, not open-market trades. The site insider aggregate has no DECK row, so no site comparison exists for this window. The single buy is flagged as a non-officer purchase; officer buys are zero in every window. |
| Congress | Oct 3, 2026 | No-transactions-found finding: no DECK row in the combined, House, Senate, or members files. The members file covers House PTR filings for 2026 with transactions dated on or after April 1, 2026; the Senate file is asof October 1, 2026. Congress sells are member-disclosure transactions, not Form 4 insider transactions, and are never added to insider totals. |
| 13D/G | May 6, 2026 | Passive-only register; no 13D filing exists in the parsed set. Jointly-reported positions are not summed. Total shares reported (98,419,894.18) sums reporter rows across dates and counts each joint position once per reporting entity, and is not an economic total. FMR's 13.8% is the register maximum; its 4.3% figure is the latest filing. |
| Short interest | Sep 15, 2026 | Shares-outstanding count as of July 9, 2026; the 6.93% ratio inherits that basis. The peak claim is a maximum over all 137 raw settlements, with the split sensitivity stated in the short-interest section: the largest pre-split settlement scaled by 6 (8,453,634) is still below the latest value, and the latest is also the post-split maximum. The series has one step over 2× (the split step, 6.069×) and none under 0.5×. |
| Prices | Oct 23, 2026 (fresh close) | Price file ends Oct 2, 2026; the Oct 23 close ($81.09) and moves derived from it are cross-source (chart_stats) and labelled as such. The 52-week-high field ($122.29) is the chart_stats field, not a recomputed file maximum. The price file records a 6-for-1 split on September 17, 2024, with no day-to-day jump at the split date. |
| Fundamentals | FY2026 | Recorded market capitalisation uses the record's own price_close ($81.66 as of Oct 6, 2026), not the Oct 23 close, and is quoted only as the record's figure. |
| Hype source | Oct 25, 2026 (AltIndex list) | Social-attention listing only (AltIndex, updated Oct 25, 2026 at 6:55 AM Pacific); no news event is cited for Deckers Outdoor in this article. Price moves are measured from the price file and chart_stats. |
