GetCoattail Research — The Filing Tape #199. CSX Corp through six filing lenses, as of the latest filings. Past patterns are not a promise of future results. For education only — not investment advice.
The Hype
CSX Corp (CSX) sits on TipRanks' "Trending Stocks by Analyst" list, ranked by recent analyst activity, with page values dated October 23, 2026. The names ranked ahead of it are all already covered, already skipped for missing data, or — in the case of the London Stock Exchange — a foreign listing with no record in our fundamentals file, making CSX the first uncovered name with a complete record. The page lists a Moderate Buy consensus for it, a $53.27 price target (4.88% upside), and 6 Buy, 2 Hold, and 1 Sell ratings (row values dated October 23, 2026). No other news event is cited for CSX: the attention claim rests on that listing plus the measured price tape.
The price tape behind the attention is a rise, not a fall. CSX closed 2025 at $36.25, stood at $41.05 by March 31, 2026, then rose 15.8% in Q2 to $47.53 by June 30, eased to $46.51 by September 30, and closed the price file on October 2 at $47.43 — 0.2% below its June 30 close but 30.8% above its 2025 year-end close. The daily refresh (cross-source) puts the October 23 close at $50.79 — 7.1% above the October 2 close and 40.1% above the 2025 year-end close. While the price rose in Q2, what did the tracked holders, the broad market, insiders, members of Congress, and the passive register actually do?

Chart: CSX through six filing lenses — who is actually there?
Superinvestors. The tracked register for CSX is small, concentrated, and dominated by a single new name. Five of 147 tracked managers hold 6,121,876 common shares — $290,972,766 reported — and the largest holder is 65.5% of it. Slate Path Capital holds 4,009,200 shares at 2.64% of its portfolio, labelled NEW. Harry Burn's Sound Shore holds 1,472,441 shares at 2.15% of its portfolio, DECREASED −26.5% against a verified Q1 pair of 2,002,159 shares. Thomas Gayner's Markel Group holds 584,500 shares at 0.21% of its portfolio, INCREASED +10.3% against a verified Q1 pair of 530,000 shares. Kahn Brothers Group holds 34,781 shares at 0.26% of its portfolio, DECREASED −4.7% against a verified Q1 pair of 36,481 shares. Mondrian Investment Partners holds 20,954 shares at 0.02% of its portfolio, DECREASED −48.1% against a verified Q1 pair of 40,362 shares. All four continuing labels recompute exactly, under both pairing methods, and no September early filer holds CSX.
The continuing cohort fell, and that fall is verified: the 4 continuing holders held 2,609,002 shares in Q1, so the cohort shrank 496,326 shares, or 19.0%, in Q2. But the register fell much further, and the difference is the story. The Q1 register held 21,287,054 shares; the Q2 register holds 6,121,876 — a 71.2% fall. The gap is one name: Viking Global Investors held 18,678,052 CSX shares at March 31, 2026 — 87.7% of the Q1 register, at an implied $41.05 that matches the March 31 close exactly — and its June 30 filing contains no CSX row at all. That is a full exit, visible only by comparing the pipeline registers — Viking's managers-file entry carries an empty exit list, so the article does not call it a labelled exit there. With Viking attributed, both registers reconcile exactly: Q1 is the continuing 2,609,002 plus Viking's 18,678,052, and Q2 is the continuing 2,112,676 plus Slate Path's new 4,009,200. The cohort is 0.42% of the full market's reported CSX shares — a small footprint that shrank while the price rose.
Slate Path's NEW label was checked against the shared-filer trap: it files under the shared series filer CIK 1172661, so all 27 Q1 accessions under that prefix were checked for a CSX row; none holds one.
All institutions. The broad market moved the other way from the tracked cohort, on a much larger scale. Filers rose by 141 to 1,994, of which 1,987 are long, while reported shares rose 17.57% (+217,622,598 shares to 1,456,028,831). Reported value rose 38.07% to $64.69 billion — value up faster than shares, because the June 30 close ($47.53) sits above the March 31 close ($41.05). Underneath, 1,568 filers entered and 1,427 exited, net +141. Excluding the tracked cohort, other institutions hold 1,449,906,955 shares — so the broad market's Q2 share growth dwarfs the tracked register's fall, and the two moved in opposite directions.
Insiders. This lens is quiet in the recent window and narrow in the year window. In the 90 days to October 2, 2026, insiders bought nothing and sold $2,283,540.00 worth of stock: 7 filings, 0 buys, 2 sells, 43,000 shares, both officer sells — Burns Michael S., 13,000 shares at $52.68 on July 27, and Williams Angela C., 30,000 shares at $53.29 on July 27. In the year to October 2, 2026: 65 filings, 2 buys, 9 sells, 80,000 shares bought for $3,034,600.00 against 433,133 shares sold for $18,599,253.17, by 1 buyer and 6 sellers. Across the whole corpus, the same 2 buys appear, with 10 sells totalling 434,633 shares for $18,646,368.17. The scan for issuer CIK 277948 (99 files, all CSX, January 28, 2025 to September 28, 2026) matches the aggregate exactly. One qualification matters: the site insider aggregate has no CSX row, so the 90-day window is verified by the agg-vs-scan match alone, not by a site row. The article therefore never says insiders "never bought": zero buys in the 90 days, exactly 2 buys in the year, both by President & CEO Stephen F. Angel — 55,000 shares at $36.87 (filed October 21, 2025) and 25,000 shares at $40.27 (filed March 6, 2026). The only non-officer sell in the year is Zillmer John J., 10,000 shares on June 4, 2026. Implied prices sit inside the price-file range in every window.
Congress. This lens holds sells only, plus a reporting quirk that has to be stated plainly. The combined file records 0 buys and 4 sells: the House row records 3 sells and the Senate row records 1 sell, with the combined file's member-count field reading 0 in all three rows. The House member file names the House sellers and reconciles exactly: Hern, Kevin (R), 2 sells, last transaction August 31, 2026; and Newhouse, Dan (R), 1 sell, last transaction July 10, 2026 — 3 sells in total, each in the $1,001–$15,000 band. The Senate sell has no member name in any file available to this run, so no senator is named and the Senate sell is reported as unattributed. The member file covers House disclosures for 2026 (transactions dated on or after April 1, 2026); the Senate row is a different aggregate (as-of October 1, 2026). Congress findings are member-disclosure aggregates, not Form 4 insider transactions, and are never added to insider totals.
13D/G. The control register is entirely passive, with one below-threshold exit print. It holds 3 filings: 0 Schedule 13D forms, 2 Schedule 13G forms, and 1 Schedule 13G/A amendment, from 3 distinct reporter names. The largest reported percentage is 7.52% for Vanguard Capital Management (139,956,863 shares, event March 31, 2026, filed April 29, 2026) — which is also the latest filing. JPMorgan Chase & Co. reported 5.5% (106,679,163 shares, event December 31, 2024, filed February 12, 2025). The Vanguard Group's March 2026 filing reports 0.0 shares at 0.0% (event March 13, 2026, filed March 26, 2026) — a below-threshold print, quoted as reported, not as a holding. The two Vanguard names are kept separate and not merged. The aggregate matches the parsed set exactly.
Short interest. The bear trade is near its peak, not at it. FINRA short interest stood at 40,751,812 shares at September 15, 2026, with 4.37 days to cover and 2.20% of the 1,852,474,917 shares outstanding (a point-in-time count as of June 30, 2026). That latest settlement is 3.1% below the series peak of 42,065,384 (April 15, 2026), 0.76% below the prior settlement (41,063,437 at August 31), 4.6% above June 30 (38,966,330), and 19.1% above the year-ago figure (34,208,922 at September 15, 2025). The last six settlements read: 38,966,330 (June 30), 36,965,072 (July 15), 36,353,084 (July 31), 34,310,600 (August 14), 41,063,437 (August 31), 40,751,812 (September 15) — down through mid-August, then a jump at August 31 that mostly held. The series low is 5,513,517 (May 28, 2021). One step needs a flag, not a story: the largest step, 2.333× from June 15 to June 30, 2021, carries a stock-split flag matching the 3-for-1 split on June 29, 2021, so it is mechanical, not trading.
Chart: CSX short interest — 137 FINRA settlements, January 2021 to September 2026.
Fundamentals context. Shares outstanding are 1,852,474,917 (June 30, 2026); FY2025 revenue $14,092,000,000, net income $2,889,000,000, assets $43,682,000,000.
The Gap
The attention and the filing tape pull in different directions here, and the tracked cohort and the broad market pull against each other too. A trending listing with a Moderate Buy consensus and 6 Buy ratings puts CSX in front of readers while the Q2 price rose 15.8% — yet the tracked continuing cohort shrank 19.0% in that quarter and the tracked register fell 71.2% once Viking's exit is counted. The broad market, meanwhile, added 17.57% in shares and 141 filers in the same quarter. So the gap is not between the price and the tape as a whole: the broad tape and the price agree, and the tracked corner disagrees with both. Insiders add a quieter disagreement — no buys in 90 days, only the CEO's two buys in the year — while Congress sold only, the control register holds no activist-form filing, and short interest sits near its peak rather than at it. The market added through the rise; the tracked holders, led out by Viking, did not.
What Would Change the Picture
Nothing above is a recommendation. It is a record. What would change it:
- 1. Q3 13F season (filings due by November 16, 2026). Watch whether Slate Path holds or trims its 4,009,200 shares, whether any tracked holder reopens a Viking-sized position, and whether the tracked register's 71.2% Q2 fall extends, holds, or reverses.
- 2. A first insider buy after October 2, 2026 by anyone other than the CEO would widen a buying lens that currently holds exactly one buyer.
- 3. A first congressional buy, or a named Senate seller for CSX would change a lens that currently holds sells only and one unattributed Senate sell.
- 4. A new Schedule 13D filing, a new passive reporter above 5%, or a new Schedule 13G/A moving Vanguard Capital Management above or below 7.52% would change a control register that currently holds no activist-form filing.
- 5. Short-interest direction. A fall back toward the August 14 level of 34,310,600 — or a rise through the April 2026 peak of 42,065,384 — would each tell a different story about a bear position that dipped, jumped, and mostly held.
As-of & Limits
| Lens | As of | Limit or note |
|---|---|---|
| Superinvestors (13F) | Jun 30, 2026 | 13F figures are as of June 30, 2026, the quarter-end. Funds have up to 45 days after quarter-end to file, so this is the most recent complete picture — and it is always a lagging one. Common stock only (CUSIP 126408103); no option rows, no second class in the tracked file. All continuing labels recompute exactly under both pairing methods. Slate Path's NEW label was checked against all 27 Q1 accessions under its shared series filer prefix. Viking's 18,678,052-share exit is a pipeline-register comparison, not a labelled exit in managers_13f.json, whose exited array for Viking is empty. Both registers reconcile exactly once Viking is attributed. No September early filer holds CSX. |
| All institutions (13F) | Jun 30, 2026 | Reported value includes option rows by definition; implied price ($44.43) is not a price check. Value rose faster than shares because the June close sits above the March close. |
| Insiders (Form 4) | Oct 2, 2026 | Zero buys in the 90 days to October 2, 2026; exactly 2 buys totalling 80,000 shares in the year, both by President & CEO Stephen F. Angel. The scan (99 files, issuer CIK 277948) matches the aggregate exactly. The site insider aggregate has no CSX row, so no site-match claim is made. |
| Congress | Oct 3, 2026 | Sells only: 0 buys, 4 sells in the combined file (House 3, Senate 1). House sellers named: Hern, Kevin (R), 2 sells; Newhouse, Dan (R), 1 sell. The Senate sell is unattributed in the available files, so no senator is named. The agg files' member-count field reads 0 in all three rows despite the member file naming 2 House sellers. Congress findings are member-disclosure aggregates, not Form 4 insider transactions, and are never added to insider totals. |
| 13D/G | Apr 29, 2026 | Entirely passive register: 0 SC 13D forms, 2 SC 13G, 1 SC 13G/A. Filing percentages are as reported in each filing; denominators differ by filing date and are not recomputed. The two Vanguard reporter names are kept separate. The Vanguard Group's 0.0-share March 2026 print is quoted as reported. |
| Short interest | Sep 15, 2026 | Shares-outstanding count is a point-in-time count as of June 30, 2026. The largest step (2.333×, June 2021) carries a stock-split flag matching the 3-for-1 split — read the level and the drift, not that step. |
| Prices | Oct 23, 2026 (fresh close) | Price file ends Oct 2, 2026; the Oct 23 close ($50.79) and moves derived from it are cross-source (chart_stats) and labelled as such. The price file's splits field records a 3-for-1 split on June 29, 2021, and its rows show no break at the split. The chart_stats 52-week-high field ($53.60) is a different window from the price file's 252-day high ($53.23) and is quoted as its own field. |
| Fundamentals | FY2025 | Recorded market capitalisation uses the record's own price_close ($47.50 as of Oct 6, 2026), not the Oct 23 close, and is quoted only as the record's figure. Shares outstanding are a point-in-time count as of June 30, 2026. |
| Hype source | Oct 26, 2026 (TipRanks trending list) | Listing only (trending by analyst activity, page values dated October 23, 2026; CSX row values dated October 23, 2026); no other news event is cited for CSX in this article. Price moves are measured from the price file and chart_stats. |
Methodology & disclaimer: 13F holdings are long common shares unless stated; reported values include option rows for the all-institutions lens by definition. Short interest is FINRA twice-monthly settlements. Trading costs and taxes are not reflected in any figure. Past patterns are not a promise of future results.
