RESEARCH — THE FILING TAPE #125

Six of 147: Yacktman Is 53.2% of the Tracked Diamondback Stake, and the Verified Cohort Grew 4.2% in a Quarter When the Price Fell 11.1%

October 19, 2026

GetCoattail Research — The Filing Tape #125. Diamondback Energy surfaced on a trending-stocks screen this week listed as a Strong Buy with three Buy ratings and one Hold, and the filings describe a small, concentrated tracked register that grew modestly in the second quarter: 6 of the 147 superinvestors held the stock at June 30, 2026, totalling 1,905,076 shares, verified against the first quarter for a combined increase of 4.2% among continuing holders. Insiders recorded no purchase in the last year and exactly one in the entire parsed record, Congress has no row at all, and short interest stands at 2.72% of the share count.

The Hype

Diamondback's attention this week is a screen story. The stock appeared on TipRanks' Trending Stocks by Analyst screener — SCHW and SMTC topped the page's order, followed by covered or skipped names including BAC, RKLB, BNY, BLK, ARWR and WCN — listed as a Strong Buy with a price target of $236.21 (15.82% upside as printed), 3 Buy, 1 Hold and 0 Sell ratings, a printed change of +4.84%, a market value of $57.11B as printed, in Energy, dated October 16, 2026. TipRanks Our price file shows the path behind the screen: the stock fell 11.1% in the second quarter, from $197.79 on March 31 to $175.78 on June 30, then rose to $184.71 by October 2 — up 5.1% from the June 30 close, up 22.9% year to date, and 13.6% below the 252-session high of $213.69 (May 4, 2026).

The Tape

For Diamondback Energy — the one hundred and twenty-fifth Filing Tape audit — the tape shows six June holders growing 4.2% on a verified continuing basis, a full market adding shares faster than filers, no insider purchase in a year, no Congress row, a 5% register whose largest position has fallen at every print, and a borrow down sharply since June.

Lens 1 — the superinvestors: six June holders, one at 53.2% of the stake, a verified cohort up 4.2%. We track 149 managers whose 13F portfolios we collect from SEC EDGAR — 147 are in the collection (144 at a June 30 period-end, 3 early filers at September 30, none of them holding this name, so there is no period split) — and the June 30, 2026 register for the common stock (CUSIP 25278X109) is 6 distinct managers holding 1,905,076 shares worth $334,877,213, long only, with no option rows and no debt rows: 3 are labelled DECREASED, 2 INCREASED and 1 NEW. Yacktman Asset Management is the largest: 1,014,114 shares worth $178,260,959 — 53.2% of the tracked stake — at a 2.20% portfolio weight, labelled INCREASED at +1.0% (filed August 11, 2026). The second holder, GQG Partners, holds 587,036 shares (30.8%, NEW, at a 0.19% weight), so the top two hold 84.0% — 1,601,150 shares — between them. The rest are Tortoise Capital Advisors (131,944 shares, INCREASED +155.3%), Arnold Van Den Berg - Century Management (81,302 shares, DECREASED -2.0%, at the register's largest weight, 3.02%), Guinness Asset Management (66,789 shares, DECREASED -10.9%) and Energy Income Partners (23,891 shares, DECREASED -53.4%). The growth verifies row by row under two register methods that agree exactly (methodology): the five continuing holders held 1,264,871 shares at March 31 and 1,318,040 at June 30 (+53,169 shares, +4.2%), with no unverified holder and no exit. The pipeline register rose 50.6% (1,264,871 to 1,905,076 shares) — a different figure from the continuing cohort's +4.2%, differing only because the new holder, GQG Partners, sits in the second register alone. Every row implies $175.78, the June 30 close. 13F figures are as of June 30, 2026, published up to 45 days later.

Diamondback Energy through six filing lenses
Chart 1: Signal presence by cohort (n = 6 superinvestor holders among 147 managers, at Jun 30, 2026, long only; no option rows; no September 30, 2026 early filer holds this name). Superinvestors: 2026Q2 13F collection, as of Jun 30, 2026. Institutions: full-market 13F aggregation, Jun 30, 2026 (n = 1,190 filers). Insiders: Form 4 through Oct 2, 2026 (n = 109 filings). Congress: PTR aggregates through Oct 3, 2026 (Senate through Oct 1, 2026) — no row in any aggregate. 13D/G: parsed filings through Sep 17, 2026 (n = 9 filings). Short interest: FINRA settlements through Sep 15, 2026 (n = 137 settlements, symbol FANG only). Source: SEC EDGAR; FINRA; GetCoattail collections.

Lens 2 — institutions: nine more filers reporting 24.54% more shares. At June 30, 2026, 1,190 institutions reported positions, up 9 from 1,181 at March 31 (+0.76%); 1,183 are long. Reported shares rose 24.54%, from 160,853,700 to 200,321,126 (+39,467,426 shares), and reported value rose 10.17% to $35,140,440,703, labelled "reported" because the aggregate includes option rows (methodology). Flow counts agree: 1,010 entered, 1,001 exited, net +9, and the by-CUSIP row matches the by-ticker row on every field. The reported value implies $175.42 against a June 30 close of $175.78 (-0.20%).

Lens 3 — insiders: no purchase in a year, exactly one in the whole record, against 105 sales. The parsed Form 4 record holds 109 filings through October 2, 2026, and it contains exactly one purchase transaction: 2,000 shares for $313,019.80, by 1 buyer, with no officer purchase transaction — so the sole purchase is not an officer purchase, and it is older than the one-year window, which holds no purchase at all. The last 90 days hold 0 purchases and 16 sales: 18,300,509 shares for $3,756,249,395.24, by 9 sellers, 8 of them officer sale transactions, across 15 filings. The one-year window holds 92 sales (46,783,754 shares, $8,900,725,396.61, 11 sellers, 40 officer sale transactions) across 79 filings, and the full record holds 105 sales (46,826,807 shares, $8,906,943,400.30, 11 sellers, 50 officer sale transactions). The sales imply $205.25 per share (90 days), $190.25 (one year) and $190.21 (full record), and the single purchase implies $156.51, each inside its window's close range on our price file — so the dollar totals are cited for every window.

Lens 4 — Congress: no row in any aggregate. The combined record (as of October 3, 2026), the House aggregate (as of October 3, 2026) and the Senate aggregate (as of October 1, 2026) each carry no row for this name. That absence is itself the finding.

Lens 5 — the 5% register: nine filings, and a largest position that has fallen at every print. Our full parse holds 9 SC 13D/G filings matching the site aggregate — 6 SC 13D family (all SC 13D/A), 3 SC 13G family (2 SC 13G, 1 SC 13G/A); 7 amendments, 17 reporter names across 27 reporter rows. The maximum is 35.1%: SGF FANG Holdings, LP printed 101,686,727 shares at 35.1% as of August 13, 2025 (filed August 15, 2025, SC 13D/A) — and Greth Lyndal printed the identical shares and percentage in the same filing, a joint report of one position, never summed; that filing also lists nine further Stephens- and Endeavor-affiliated rows at 0 shares and 0.0%. The SGF print then fell at every step: 99,686,727 at 34.8% (November 28, 2025), 97,686,727 at 34.1% (February 3, 2026), 84,036,722 at 29.9% (March 12, 2026), 74,036,722 at 26.3% (June 4, 2026) and 64,957,047 at 23.2% as of September 16, 2026, in the latest filing (filed September 17, 2026), with Greth Lyndal identical at each step. In the passive family, The Vanguard Group printed 0 shares at 0.0% as of March 13, 2026, Vanguard Capital Management printed 14,701,028 shares at 5.21% as of March 31, 2026, and one SC 13G as of June 30, 2026 carries four Wellington rows on the same 16,420,247 shares — three at 5.8% and Wellington Management Company LLP at 5.7% — again one position, not summed.

Lens 6 — short interest: a borrow down 23.7% since June and 37.8% below its 2022 peak. The latest FINRA settlement, September 15, 2026, records 7,630,501 shares sold short — 2.72% of the 280,024,353 shares outstanding — at 4.09 days to cover, down 7.03% from the prior settlement (8,207,836 on August 31, 2026). Against June 30, 2026 (10,005,127) the latest is down 23.7%, and against a year ago (8,209,666 on September 15, 2025) down 7.1%. The series maximum across 137 settlements is 12,273,997 on November 15, 2022, so the latest sits 37.8% below that peak; the minimum is 2,710,768 on May 28, 2021. The recent path runs 10,005,127 (June 30), 9,172,001 (July 15), 8,265,155 (July 31), 7,605,686 (August 14), 8,207,836 (August 31) and 7,630,501 (September 15) — three falls, a rise, then a fall. The series is published as collected.

Chart 2: Shares sold short in Diamondback Energy at each FINRA biweekly settlement, Jan 15, 2021 – Sep 15, 2026 (n = 137 settlements, symbol FANG only; the issuer-name field appears in two FINRA truncation spellings of the same name). The latest reading, 7,630,501 shares on Sep 15, 2026, fell 7.03% on the settlement, sits 23.7% below the Jun 30, 2026 settlement of 10,005,127 and 37.8% below the series maximum of 12,273,997 shares on Nov 15, 2022. No single-step ratio in the series reaches 2 times or falls to 0.5 times or below — the largest step is 1.400x and the smallest 0.700x — and the series is plotted as collected, with no smoothing. The Gap

The narrative arriving this week is an analyst-consensus story: a Strong Buy trending listing, 3 Buy ratings against one Hold and no Sell, a printed target above the last close, on a stock that fell 11.1% in the second quarter and has since recovered 5.1%. The June tape is narrower than the listing. The tracked register is small — six holders — and concentrated, with one holder at 53.2% and the top two at 84.0%; its verified continuing growth of 4.2% is real but modest, the largest holder added only 1.0%, and the register's rise of 50.6% is one new holder, not broad buying. The broad market did add shares — 24.54% more on 9 more filers. The insider record is one-way: no purchase in the last year, a single 2,000-share purchase in the entire 109-filing record, against $8.9 billion of sales over one year. Congress is absent entirely. The largest 5% position has fallen at every print, from 35.1% to 23.2%, while the borrow has eased 23.7% since June. One plausible reading is that the trending case rests on breadth the filings do not show: the tracked money is few and concentrated, insider buying confirmation is absent, and one lens — Congress — is simply empty.

What Would Change the Picture

Nothing above is a recommendation. These filings would change it:
