GetCoattail Research — SoFi is the market's growth-versus-credit argument: a quarter with revenue up 40%, a stock down 39.8% this year in our price file, and an earnings date three weeks away. We ran it through every filing lens we maintain. Two of our 83 superinvestors hold it long — 1,571,240 shares between them — Congress has never filed on it in our record, and the borrow against it is 188,982,888 shares, 14.63% of the share count.
Start with the narrative: growth the market is pricing as a credit question. SoFi's second quarter of 2026 was reported with adjusted net revenue of $1.2 billion, up 40% year over year, GAAP net income of $156.6 million, up 61%, and diluted earnings per share of $0.12 against a consensus of $0.11. Lending drove the print: lending segment net revenue of $724.8 million, up 63%, total loan originations of $14.8 billion, and fee-based revenue of $472.3 million. Personal-loan charge-offs were reported at 2.62%, down from 3.03% in the prior quarter. Management raised full-year 2026 adjusted net revenue guidance to $4.75–$4.85 billion, and the company has scheduled its third-quarter report for October 27, 2026. The market's response has run the other way: TD Cowen cut its price target from $18.00 to $17.50 on October 6, holding a Hold rating, and in our price file the shares sit 51.0% below their November 2025 closing high. Insider Monkey's Google-search ranking places SoFi seventeenth, at 823,000 average monthly searches — the highest-ranked stock we had not yet audited once the AltIndex top ten, all previously covered or skipped, was set aside.
Now the filings. GetCoattail tracks the investors best placed to know any company: superinvestors, institutions, insiders, Congress, and 5% holders. For SoFi — the twenty-fourth Filing Tape audit — the story is a tracked cohort of two, an insider register that actually contains purchases, a congressional register that contains nothing at all, and a borrow that has grown 75.6% in a year.
Lens 1: the superinvestors — two holders, and one of them is 95.8% of the cohort
We track 83 large, mostly long-only managers whose 13F portfolios we collect directly from SEC EDGAR. As of June 30, 2026, 2 held SoFi in a long common-stock position — long rows, with no option rows in the count. Together the two held 1,571,240 shares worth $28,172,348. The quarter-to-quarter comparison, on the pipeline's CUSIP basis in both quarters, runs from 1,429,591 shares at March 31 to 1,571,240 shares at June 30 — up 9.91%. The pipeline and EDGAR-collection totals agree exactly. The direction count is split: zero new, one increased, one decreased, zero unchanged — no manager opened a position in the quarter.
The cohort is effectively one holder. Samantha McLemore's Patient Capital Management holds 1,505,629 shares worth $26,995,943, a 0.88% portfolio weight, increased 13.5% in the quarter — 95.8% of the entire cohort. The only other tracked holder is Polen Capital Management, with 65,611 shares worth $1,176,405, a 0.01% weight, decreased 36.5%. The quarter's 9.91% cohort growth therefore describes one manager adding and one manager trimming, in a quarter when the price rose from $15.88 to $17.93 in our price file, up 12.9%.
Lens 2: institutions — more filers, more shares, higher reported value
Zoom out to the whole 13F market and the register grew on every axis, though modestly at the filer level. At June 30, 2026, 935 institutions reported positions, up from 925 at March 31 (+1.08%), and 919 reported long positions. Reported shares rose 11.36%, from 584,187,617 to 650,563,357 shares, with 833 filers entering and 823 exiting. Reported aggregate value rose 17.04% to $16,312,772,143; the aggregate includes option rows, so we headline filer and share counts and label dollars "reported" (see methodology). The implied value per share, $25.07, sits 39.8% above the June 30 close of $17.93 — the second-widest such gap we have published in this series, behind only IREN's, and itself a sign of how much of this name's reported 13F value runs through option rows rather than common shares.
Lens 3: the 5% register — seven filings, all 13G, no activist
Seven SC 13D/G filings cover SoFi — zero in the 13D family and seven 13G filings, three of them amendments, with eight reporting names in aggregate, most recently filed April 30, 2026, maximum reported percentage 5.5%. The largest single row belongs to Vanguard Capital Management, which reported 68,207,763 shares (5.34%) as of March 31, 2026, filed April 30, 2026. BlackRock reported 64,797,945 shares (5.1%) as of March 31, 2026, filed April 27, 2026. Jane Street Group reported 65,326,866 shares (5.5%) as of July 30, 2025, filed August 6, 2025 — a group row that includes its options affiliate — and its amendment as of September 30, 2025 reported 30,678,897 shares (2.6%). JPMorgan Chase reported 64,981,867 shares (5.1%) as of December 31, 2025, then 47,207,186 shares (3.7%) as of January 30, 2026. The Vanguard Group reported a 0-share row as of March 13, 2026, filed March 27, 2026 — the same sequence seen in several earlier audits, where a Vanguard position reappears under a related reporting name; we report rows as filed, without summing them or calling the zero an exit.
Lens 4: insiders — seven purchases in the record, against $20,525,987.22 of sales
This register is unusual for this series: the buy column is not empty. Across the parsed Form 4 record (158 filings through October 2, 2026), there are seven open-market purchases totalling 140,211 shares and $2,456,237.64, by three buyers — and all seven are recorded as officer purchases. Against that stand 33 sales totalling 1,072,686 shares and $20,525,987.22, by six sellers, 30 of them recorded as officer sales. All seven purchases fall in the most recent year (93 filings), which also holds 19 sales totalling $11,825,913.18, by five sellers. In the 90 days through October 2, 2026, 22 filings covered zero purchases and four sales totalling 51,067 shares and $890,704.81, by two sellers, all four recorded as officer sales. Our site's insider aggregate (October 9, 2026) records exactly the same 90-day figures — zero purchases, four sales, $890,704.81 — matching the full parse exactly. Some selling is mechanical — vesting, tax withholding and pre-arranged plans — and we assign no motives.
Lens 5: Congress — no record in either chamber
Across the Senate and House record we maintain (combined record as of October 3, 2026), SoFi's register is empty: no member, no purchase transactions and no sale transactions. The House aggregate (as of October 3, 2026) carries no SoFi record, and the Senate aggregate (as of October 1, 2026) carries no SoFi record. We report the lens as blank rather than omitting it: in the record we maintain, no lawmaker has disclosed a trade in this stock.
Lens 6: short interest — up 75.6% in a year, at 14.63% of the share count
As of September 15, 2026 — the most recent FINRA settlement date — 188,982,888 SoFi shares were sold short, with days-to-cover of 5.23, up 6.48% from the prior settlement. The series peak stands at 209,896,269 shares on March 15, 2024, so the latest reading is 10.0% below the peak, and the June 30, 2026 settlement recorded 188,100,006 shares. Against the 1,291,570,324 shares in our fundamentals file (as of July 31, 2026), the borrow is 14.63% of the share count — a different order of magnitude from the low-single-digit ratios in most recent audits in this series. Year over year the growth is steep: the September 15, 2025 settlement recorded 107,600,671 shares, so the borrow is up 75.6%.
The recent settlements run 185,956,377 on July 15, then 190,758,849, 172,515,246, 177,480,044 and 188,982,888. The series began at 28,280,824 shares on June 15, 2021, and its lowest reading is 10,950,502 shares on July 15, 2021 — the borrow at the March 2024 peak was roughly nineteen times that low.
The gap, stated plainly
The registers describe a stock the tracked smart money has mostly not joined, financed against by a large and growing borrow. Two of 83 tracked superinvestors hold SoFi — 1,571,240 shares, 95.8% of them with a single holder who increased 13.5% while the only other holder cut 36.5%. The full market moved more broadly: filers rose 1.08% to 935 while reported shares rose 11.36% to 650,563,357 and reported value rose 17.04%. Insiders are the series' exception: seven purchases totalling $2,456,237.64 stand in the record, all by officers — against 33 sales totalling $20,525,987.22, and no purchases at all in the last 90 days. Congress registers nothing: no record in either chamber. And the borrow, at 188,982,888 shares and 14.63% of the share count, is up 75.6% in a year and 10.0% below its March 2024 peak, in a stock 51.0% below its November closing high in our file and down 39.8% year to date. One plausible reading is that the registers describe a contested name rather than an ignored one — a thin tracked cohort, a broad full-market register, real insider buying inside a larger insider selling total, and a borrow that keeps growing into a falling price. The record supports each clause separately; it does not say which register is right.
What would change the picture
Nothing above is a recommendation. It is a record. These are the filings that would change the description:
- 1. The 2026Q3 13Fs (filing window closing mid-November 2026). Q3 contains the run-up to the October 27 earnings report. Whether Patient Capital's 1,505,629 shares survived it, whether Polen's remaining 65,611 shares did, and whether any of the other 81 tracked managers opens a position after another zero-new quarter, is the whole lens: at two holders, a single filer's decision rewrites this register in either direction.
- 2. Insider filings after October 2 — in either direction. Seven purchases totalling $2,456,237.64 stand against 33 sales totalling $20,525,987.22 in the parsed record, with zero purchases in the last 90 days. A purchase after the October 27 print would restart a buy column that has been quiet for a quarter; continued absence extends the recent pattern.
- 3. The next short-interest settlements after a 75.6% year. The borrow stood at 188,982,888 shares on September 15, up from 107,600,671 a year earlier and 10.0% below the March 15, 2024 peak of 209,896,269. The next settlements show whether borrowers treat the 2024 peak as a ceiling or a waypoint: FINRA publishes every two weeks.
- 4. A first congressional filing, from anyone. No member of either chamber appears in the record we maintain. A single House or Senate transaction would create a register that does not currently exist.
- 5. Any 13D, from anyone. The 5% register holds seven 13G filings and nothing else — passive, index and market-making rows from Vanguard Capital Management at 5.34%, BlackRock at 5.1% and Jane Street at 5.5%. A first 13D, or a new 13G filer above 5%, would change the character of that register.
Until one of those prints, the record describes a stock held by two of our 83 tracked superinvestors — 1,571,240 shares, 95.8% of them with one holder — whose insiders have bought seven times in the parsed record against $20,525,987.22 of sales, which no lawmaker in our record has traded, and whose borrow, at 188,982,888 shares, has risen 75.6% in a year to 14.63% of the share count.

Methodology and data notes
- Superinvestor lens: 83 managers collected directly from SEC EDGAR Form 13F (managers_13f collection), positions as of June 30, 2026; SoFi identified by CUSIP 83406F102. Two distinct managers hold a long position totalling 1,571,240 shares; both reported rows are long (no put or call rows). Quarter-to-quarter cohort totals (1,429,591 shares at March 31; 1,571,240 shares at June 30) are from the site pipeline's holdings files on the same CUSIP basis in both quarters; the change is +9.91% ((1,571,240 / 1,429,591) − 1), and the pipeline's second-quarter totals agree exactly with the EDGAR collection's long totals (difference: 0 shares and $0). The largest holder's share of the cohort is 1,505,629 / 1,571,240 = 95.8%. Direction counts across the two long holders: 0 new, 1 increased, 1 decreased, 0 unchanged.
- Full-market lens: SEC Form 13F Data Sets full-market aggregation (the fixtures underlying our 2026Q1–Q2 market tables). Holders = distinct filers reporting the CUSIP; 919 of the 935 reported long positions. Reported-value caution: the aggregate value ($16,312,772,143 over 650,563,357 shares) implies ≈$25.07 per share against a June 30, 2026 close of $17.93 in our price file, a gap of 39.8% — the second-widest we have published in this series, behind IREN's 83.1% gap in Filing Tape #1. The aggregate sums the VALUE of every information-table row — including put and call option rows — while the share count covers long common-stock rows only, so we headline filer and share counts and label dollar values "reported."
- Insider lens: full-parse Form 4 aggregation (agg_by_ticker), record as of October 2, 2026 (158 filings). Sale and purchase counts are transaction-code counts (S and P) in non-derivative rows; grants and exercises are not counted as purchases, and one filing can contain many transaction rows. Purchase transactions total seven across the full record (140,211 shares, $2,456,237.64, three buyers), all seven recorded as officer purchases and all within the most recent year. Sale transactions total 33 across the full record (1,072,686 shares, $20,525,987.22, six sellers), of which 30 are recorded as officer sales. In the most recent year: seven purchases; 19 sale transactions, $11,825,913.18, five sellers. In the 90 days through October 2, 2026: zero purchases; four sale transactions, 51,067 shares, $890,704.81, two sellers. The site's insider aggregate (compiled as of October 9, 2026) records the same 90-day figures — zero purchases, four sale transactions and $890,704.81: it matches the full-parse figures exactly, and we report the match as observed.
- 13D/G lens: full-parse SC 13D/G aggregation and parsed filings (7 filings matching CUSIP 83406F102, eight reporting names in aggregate), filings through April 30, 2026. Vanguard Capital Management's row (68,207,763 shares at 5.34% as of March 31, 2026), BlackRock's row (64,797,945 shares at 5.1% as of March 31, 2026), Jane Street Group's rows (65,326,866 shares at 5.5% as of July 30, 2025; 30,678,897 shares at 2.6% as of September 30, 2025), JPMorgan Chase's rows (64,981,867 shares at 5.1% as of December 31, 2025; 47,207,186 shares at 3.7% as of January 30, 2026) and The Vanguard Group's row (0 shares as of March 13, 2026) are reported as separate rows, as filed; they are not summed. The aggregation's totalSharesReported field (437,206,287 shares) sums overlapping reporters and successive amendments and is not used. Percentages are quoted exactly as reported in the respective filings.
- Congress lens: Senate PTR archive and House PTR archive as maintained on this site, combined record as of October 3, 2026 — no SoFi record in the combined file, the House aggregate (as of October 3, 2026) or the Senate aggregate (as of October 1, 2026). The lens is reported as None rather than omitted. Congressional disclosures report value ranges, so where this lens has data it records direction and counts only.
- Short interest lens: FINRA Equity Short Interest files (biweekly settlement dates), collected directly from FINRA's public distribution; the SoFi series covers 127 settlements from June 15, 2021 to September 15, 2026. The maximum of the full collected series is 209,896,269 shares on March 15, 2024, so the latest reading of 188,982,888 shares on September 15, 2026 sits 10.0% below the peak ((188,982,888 / 209,896,269) − 1) and 75.6% above the September 15, 2025 reading of 107,600,671; the change from the prior settlement (177,480,044 shares on August 31, 2026) is +6.48%. FINRA publishes each settlement about two weeks after the fact. The share-count ratio uses the fundamentals file's share count of 1,291,570,324 shares outstanding as of July 31, 2026.
- Fundamentals note: our fundamentals collection carries SoFi's fiscal-2025 net income of $481,320,000 and fiscal-2025 assets of $50,660,478,000. The same file's revenue field ($619,353,000 for fiscal 2025, sourced from a cached financial-series concept) sits below the company's reported adjusted net revenue for a single quarter of 2026, so it does not correspond to total company revenue and we do not use it as one. The market value of about $20.36 billion uses that file's October 6, 2026 price ($15.76) and reported share count.
- Prices: our own daily-close file for SoFi through October 2, 2026 ($15.77 close, −39.8% year to date on that file; 252-session closing high $32.21 on November 12, 2025; 252-session closing low $15.15 on March 30, 2026; closes of $15.88 at March 31, 2026 and $17.93 at June 30, 2026, a second-quarter change of +12.9%; change from June 30 to October 2 of −12.0% ((15.77 / 17.93) − 1)). The drawdown from the 252-session closing high is −51.0% ((15.77 / 32.21) − 1), and the gain from the 252-session closing low is +4.1%.
- Market context sources: second-quarter 2026 adjusted net revenue of $1.2 billion, up 40% year over year, GAAP net income of $156.6 million, up 61%, diluted EPS of $0.12 against a consensus of $0.11, lending segment net revenue of $724.8 million, up 63%, total loan originations of $14.8 billion, fee-based revenue of $472.3 million, personal-loan charge-offs of 2.62% against 3.03% in the prior quarter, full-year 2026 adjusted net revenue guidance of $4.75–$4.85 billion, and a third-quarter report date of October 27, 2026 — earnings and market coverage of the 2026 second-quarter report, checked October 10, 2026, summarised in our own words; a TD Cowen price-target cut from $18.00 to $17.50 with a Hold rating on October 6, 2026 — market coverage, checked October 10, 2026; search-attention ranking (SoFi seventeenth at 823,000 average monthly searches) — Insider Monkey, checked October 10, 2026; Reddit-mention top ten (all previously covered or skipped in this series) — AltIndex, checked October 10, 2026. Revision history
- v1.0 — October 10, 2026: first publication.
- v1.1 — October 10, 2026: corrected the full-market implied-value comparison: the 39.8% gap is the second-widest published in this series, behind IREN's 83.1% gap in Filing Tape #1 — not the widest, as first stated. No figures or conclusions changed.
