GetCoattail Research — The Filing Tape #147. Boeing's largest 737, the MAX 10, won FAA certification on October 20, 2026, and "boeing stock" is trending in U.S. Google searches. The filings contain a labelling error worth more than the headline: the tracked register's biggest holder is filed as a new position, but the prior-quarter register shows it already held 3,196,041 shares — corrected, the cohort's quarter is a 3.5% build, not a wave of new money.
The Hype
The attention is a certification. Flightradar24 reported on October 20, 2026 that the FAA had granted type certification to the Boeing 737-10 MAX, completing certification of the four main MAX variants — the 737-8 and 737-9 in 2017 and 2018, the 737-7 in August 2026; by the final planned test flight in July, the program had run 976 flights, more than 2,060 flight hours and about 1,040 hours of ground testing, and Boeing says deliveries begin in the coming months. Flightradar24 Reuters, via Khaleej Times, added the commercial weight: more than 1,550 MAX 10s ordered, 31% of the outstanding 737 backlog according to IBA, deliveries originally planned for 2020. Reuters The search interest is not new: a Zacks note on October 14, 2026 listed Boeing among its most searched-for stocks, down 11.1% in a month against a 2.1% gain for the S&P 500 composite, at a Rank of #4 (Sell), with a last reported quarter of $24.56 billion in revenue, up 8% year over year, and a loss of $0.76 per share against $1.24 a year earlier. Zacks A Zacks preview on October 20 put the next print on October 27: a consensus loss of $0.14 per share on $24.53 billion. Zacks Our price file adds the path: up 8.8% in the second quarter, from $199.03 on March 31 to $216.47 on June 30, then $193.56 at the October 2 close — down 10.9% year to date, 23.2% below the 252-session high close of $252.15 (January 23, 2026). The filings answer who held it into the certification, and whether the register's labels can be trusted.
The Tape
For Boeing — the one hundred and forty-seventh Filing Tape audit — the tape shows a register dominated by one holder whose filed label misstates its history, a full market that added filers and shares, no insider open-market trade in 90 days, two House sales, ten passive 5% filings, and a borrow 43.3% below its peak.
| Lens | As of | What the filings show | Direction vs prior period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superinvestors (13F) | Jun 30, 2026 | 7 holders of 147 tracked managers hold 4,999,088 shares; filed labels: 2 new, 3 increased, 2 decreased — one "new" label fails verification | Register-verified continuing cohort vs Q1: +3.5% |
| All institutions (13F) | Jun 30, 2026 | 2,630 filers; 595,935,813 shares; reported value $136,785,192,478 | Filers +130; shares +15.96%; reported value +24.25% |
| Insiders (Form 4) | Oct 2, 2026 | Last 90 days: 0 purchases and 0 sale-coded rows across 15 filings; last year: 3 purchases worth $898,413.29 and 5 sale-coded rows worth $5,250,854.91 | No open-market trade recorded in the last 90 days |
| Congress | Oct 3, 2026 | Combined and House aggregates: 0 purchases and 2 sales; Senate aggregate: no row | The member file attributes both sales to one House member |
| 13D/G | May 14, 2026 | 10 parsed filings (0 SC 13D family, 10 SC 13G family); register maximum 9.06% | Latest filing, May 14, 2026, prints Capital World Investors at 5.2% as of Mar 31, 2026 |
| Short interest (FINRA) | Sep 15, 2026 | 14,211,516 shares; 3.04 days to cover; 1.80% of the share count | Down 14.3% from a year ago; 43.3% below the series peak |
Lens 1 — the superinvestors: seven holders, and the largest one's label is wrong. Of 149 managers collected from SEC EDGAR, 147 are in the collection (144 at June 30; 3 early filers at September 30, none holding this name). The June 30, 2026 register is 7 distinct managers holding 4,999,088 shares worth $1,082,152,558, long only, with no option rows. As filed, the labels read 2 NEW, 3 INCREASED, 2 DECREASED. Viking Global Investors is the largest holder: 3,274,825 shares worth $708,901,368 — 65.5% of the tracked stake — at a 2.02% weight, labelled NEW. That label does not survive the register. Viking's second-quarter filing sits under accession prefix 0001103804, and the only first-quarter filing under that prefix — sharing 55 CUSIPs with it — holds 3,196,041 Boeing shares worth $636,108,040 at March 31. Viking is a continuing holder, up 2.5%, not a new entrant. The other NEW label verifies — Appaloosa Management's own-prefix first-quarter filing holds no Boeing row — so its 800,000 shares (16.0% of the cohort, a 2.24% weight) are genuinely new. With Viking restored, the six verified continuing holders — the other five each verified by two pairing methods (methodology) — rose from 4,055,296 shares at March 31 to 4,199,088 at June 30, a build of 3.5%: Sound Shore rose 14.7% (355,009 to 407,058 shares), Alpha Wave Global 8.8%, Mairs & Power Funds 2.0%, Causeway Capital Management eased 0.3%, Hillman Capital Management 3.4%. One holder exited (Check Capital Management, 1,445 shares at March 31). The June register implies $216.47, the June 30 close exactly. 13F figures are as of June 30, 2026, published up to 45 days later.
Lens 2 — institutions: 130 more filers, 15.96% more shares. At June 30, 2026, 2,630 institutions reported positions on the name's single CUSIP, up 130 from 2,500 at March 31 (+5.20%); 2,620 are long. Reported shares rose 15.96% to 595,935,813 (+82,012,448 shares), and reported value rose 24.25% to $136,785,192,478, labelled "reported" because the aggregate includes option rows (methodology). Flow counts agree (1,869 entered, 1,739 exited, net +130). The single-CUSIP aggregate matches the by-ticker total on every field (methodology) and implies $229.53 against the $216.47 close.
Lens 3 — insiders: no open-market trade in 90 days, small two-way traffic in a year. The parsed Form 4 record holds 159 filings through October 2, 2026. The last 90 days hold 15 filings but no open-market purchase and no sale-coded row at all. The last year holds 3 purchases across 4,154 shares worth $898,413.29, by 3 buyers (one an officer purchase of $99,102.29), against 5 sale-coded rows across 22,378.62 shares worth $5,250,854.91, by 3 sellers — all five of them officer rows. Across the full record: 4 purchases worth $1,395,833.29 against 14 sale-coded rows worth $12,476,201.48, by 8 sellers. Recorded prices inside their windows: the one-year rows imply $216.28 for purchases and $234.64 for sales, the full-record rows $219.68 and $206.83, each inside its close range in our price file (methodology). The site's 90-day insider aggregate carries no row for this name, consistent with a window with no purchase or sale-coded row in the full parse.
Lens 4 — Congress: two House sales, attributed by the member file. The combined and House aggregates (as of October 3, 2026) each record 0 purchases and 2 sales; the Senate aggregate (as of October 1, 2026) carries no row. The aggregates print the member count as zero and leave the party field empty, but the House member file from the same collection (methodology) attributes both sales to Representative Kevin Hern (R): 2 sales, the latest dated August 13, 2026, in amount bands of $1,001–$15,000 and $15,001–$50,000 — a count that equals the aggregates' 2.
Lens 5 — the 5% register: ten passive filings, and the maximum is not the latest state. Our full parse holds 10 SC 13D/G filings matching the site aggregate exactly — 0 SC 13D family and 10 SC 13G family, 6 of them amendments; 8 reporter names across 12 rows. The maximum print is The Vanguard Group at 70,989,325 shares and 9.06% as of December 31, 2025 (filed January 30, 2026, SC 13G/A). That is not the latest state for that reporter: the same name later filed 0 shares and 0.0% as of March 13, 2026, while a separate reporter, Vanguard Capital Management, printed 58,558,920 shares and 7.45% as of March 31, 2026. The latest filing is Capital World Investors at 41,497,786 shares and 5.2% as of March 31, 2026 (filed May 14, 2026).
Lens 6 — short interest: 43.3% below its peak, and down in a year. The latest FINRA settlement, September 15, 2026, records 14,211,516 shares sold short at 3.04 days to cover — 1.80% of the share count in our fundamentals file (dated July 21, 2026) — down 10.74% from the prior settlement, 4.3% above the June 30, 2026 settlement (13,625,059 shares). The series peak is 25,061,735 shares at December 31, 2024: the latest reading sits 43.3% below the highest borrow on record and 14.3% below the year-ago settlement of 16,579,168 shares. The recent path runs 13,625,059 (June 30), 14,686,375 (July 15), 15,447,762 (July 31), 14,975,040 (August 14), 15,920,835 (August 31) and 14,211,516 (September 15).
The Gap
The narrative arriving this week is a milestone-and-earnings one: the MAX family's largest variant is finally certified, more than 1,550 orders wait on it, and a quarterly print lands on October 27 — on a stock the search coverage describes as down 11.1% in a month, at a #4 (Sell) rank. The June tape — the most recent complete holdings picture, predating the certification — first corrects its own bookkeeping. Read as filed, the register looks transformed: two new holders at 81.5% of the cohort, led by a 3,274,825-share "new" position. Read against the prior-quarter register, that mostly dissolves: Viking already held 3,196,041 shares, the only genuinely new money is Appaloosa's 800,000 shares, and the six verified continuing holders built by 3.5% in a quarter when the price rose 8.8%. The full market moved more — 130 more filers, 15.96% more shares — and at 0.84% of reported institutional shares, the 147 remain a sample, not the register. The insider lens is quiet as absence, not selling pressure: 15 filings in 90 days without one open-market purchase or sale-coded row. The 5% register holds no activist, its 9.06% maximum has been superseded by a zero-share filing from the same reporter, and the borrow is down 43.3% from its peak. One plausible reading is that the filings describe a register already positioned before the milestone — quietly, and in one case under a label that understated how long it had been there.
What Would Change the Picture
Nothing above is a recommendation. These filings would change it:
- 1. The 2026Q3 13F season (filing window closing mid-November 2026). The baseline is 7 June holders with 4,999,088 shares and a verified continuing build of 3.5%. Whether Viking (3,274,825 shares) adds or trims, whether Appaloosa's new position (800,000 shares) grows, and whether this season's labels match the prior-quarter register, would each change this lens.
- 2. An insider open-market trade, in either direction, after a silent quarter. The last 90 days hold 0 purchases and 0 sale-coded rows across 15 filings. A first purchase or sale-coded row would break a silence that sits against a one-year record of 3 purchases worth $898,413.29 and 5 sale-coded rows.
- 3. A congressional purchase, or further sales. The aggregates record 2 sales and no purchases, attributed by the member file to Representative Kevin Hern (R), the latest dated August 13, 2026. Any purchase in either chamber, or a first Senate sale, would change this lens.
- 4. A first SC 13D, or a passive print above 9.06% on a current date. All 10 filings are SC 13G family, and the largest print (The Vanguard Group, 9.06% as of December 31, 2025) has since been followed by a 0-share filing from the same reporter. A first activist filing, or a new 13G print above 9.06% on a 2026 date, would change this lens.
- 5. Short interest above 15,920,835 shares, or below the June 30 settlement. Above the August 31, 2026 settlement would resume the climb into late August; below 13,625,059 shares (June 30, 2026) would extend the latest settlement's 10.74% fall.

Methodology and data notes
- As-of & limits: The lenses rest on different clocks, none live: 13F is a June 30, 2026 snapshot published up to 45 days later; Form 4 runs through October 2, 2026; Congress aggregates run through October 3, 2026 (Senate through October 1, 2026); 13D/G through May 14, 2026; short interest through September 15, 2026; the price file ends October 2, 2026. Eight limits are specific to this audit. First, the roster expanded before the recent audits — from 85 managers (83 filing) to 149 (147 filing) — so "of 147" counts are not comparable to earlier pieces' "of 83" figures. Second, this name carries a single CUSIP (097023105), and the full-market by-CUSIP row matches the by-ticker aggregate on every field — holders, long holders, shares, reported value, prior holders and prior reported value — so no CUSIP blending question arises. Third, the tracked register's change labels are not taken on trust, and in this audit one of them is wrong. The collection labels Viking Global Investors' 3,274,825-share row NEW, but the first-quarter pipeline register holds 3,196,041 Boeing shares under accession 0001103804-26-000004 — the only first-quarter accession sharing the prefix of Viking's second-quarter accession 0001103804-26-000006, whose portfolio total equals Viking's collected total exactly; the two filings share 55 CUSIPs. On that evidence this audit classifies Viking as a continuing holder with a recomputed change of +2.5%, and the register then reconciles exactly: the March 31 pipeline register holds 4,056,741 shares for this CUSIP, equal to the six verified continuing holders' 4,055,296 (the five label-continuing holders, each verified by two pairing methods — accession-prefix matching and accession identity plus CUSIP-overlap — plus Viking's 3,196,041) plus the one exit's 1,445 (Check Capital Management); without the correction the register is out by exactly Viking's first-quarter position. The June 30 register holds 4,999,088, equal to the June cohort with no remainder, because none of the three September 30 early filers holds this name. Appaloosa Management's NEW label was audited the same way: its first-quarter filing under its own prefix (0001656456-26-000002, sharing 19 CUSIPs with its second-quarter filing) holds no Boeing row, so the label stands. The verified continuing change of +3.5% covers only the six holders present in both quarters on this evidence; it excludes Appaloosa's new 800,000 shares and the exit, which is why it differs from the register-to-register change of +23.2%, which blends new money in. Fourth, the insider windows cite share totals as recorded, including two fractional sale totals in the source aggregation (22,378.62 shares over one year; 60,320.29 over the full record). The implied prices for the one-year window ($216.28 for purchases, against a $179.12–$252.15 close range; $234.64 for sales, against the same range) and the full record ($219.68 and $206.83, against $115.86–$264.27) sit inside their ranges; the 90-day window holds no purchase or sale-coded row, so no implied price exists for it. The site's 90-day insider aggregate (dated October 21, 2026) carries no row for this name; the full parse's 90 days to October 2, 2026 likewise record no purchase or sale-coded row, so the absence is read as no recorded trade, not as a disagreement. Fifth, the Congress aggregates print a member count of zero and an empty party field alongside their transaction counts (combined and House: 0 purchases, 2 sales; Senate: no row). Attribution comes from the House member file in the same collection (politicians_members.json, as of October 3, 2026; window: 2026 House PTR filings, transactions dated on or after April 1, 2026; source: U.S. House Clerk disclosures), which records Representative Kevin Hern (R) with 2 sales in this name, the latest dated August 13, 2026, in amount bands of $1,001–$15,000 and $15,001–$50,000; its sale count equals the aggregates' 2. The aggregates carry no amount field. Sixth, the 5% register's cross-date share total of 517,666,169.52 is an arithmetic sum of reporter rows across different as-of dates, not a current combined stake: two filings report the same underlying stake under two names (FMR LLC and Abigail P. Johnson, at 5.2% as of June 30, 2025 and at 7.0% as of December 31, 2025), and the register maximum (The Vanguard Group, 9.06% as of December 31, 2025) was followed by a 0-share filing from the same reporter as of March 13, 2026. Parsed totals match the aggregates exactly. Seventh, the short-interest series needs no split adjustment: our price file records no split for this name, the series holds no split-flagged row, and no settlement step reaches 2x or falls to one-half (largest step 1.380x, October 31, 2023; smallest 0.736x, March 31, 2022); four early-to-mid rows carry a FINRA revision flag (April 15, 2021, April 30, 2021, June 15, 2021 and May 31, 2023). The issuer-name field reads "Boeing Company" at all 137 settlements, on a single market class (NYSE) throughout. Against the share count in our fundamentals file — 790,370,020 shares outstanding dated July 21, 2026 — the latest borrow is 1.80%. Eighth, the full-market aggregate implies $229.53 against the June 30 close of $216.47 (+6.03%): the aggregate is a reported sum that includes option rows, so its implied price need not equal the close; the tracked register, which holds no option rows in this name, implies the close exactly. The company's fundamentals as collected print fiscal 2025 revenue of $89,463,000,000, net income of $2,235,000,000 and assets of $168,235,000,000 (fiscal year ended December 31, 2025), with 790,370,020 shares outstanding as of July 21, 2026; those figures are reported as collected and are not used in any lens above. Every price statement here is mechanical, a date and a close from our price file. The certification reporting and the Zacks notes (published October 14 and October 20, 2026) postdate the 13F snapshot; their order, backlog, return and rank figures are reported as outlet content in The Hype, and no other figure from them is cited.
