RESEARCH — THE FILING TAPE #165

Eleven of 147: Eagle Is 38.3% of the Tracked ConocoPhillips Stake, and the Verified Cohort Cut 8.4% in a Quarter When the Price Fell 21.2%

October 23, 2026

GetCoattail Research — The Filing Tape #165. ConocoPhillips has recently been on Zacks.com's list of the most searched stocks, where it carries a Rank #1 (Strong Buy). The filings show 11 tracked holders of 147 cutting a verified 8.4%, a full market holding 10.76% more shares on 81 fewer filers, and an insider record with two purchases against fifteen sales.

The Hype

The attention is search traffic with the strongest buy label attached. Zacks reports that ConocoPhillips "has recently been on Zacks.com's list of the most searched stocks," with shares up 13.7% over the past month against no change in the Zacks S&P 500 composite, while its Oil and Gas - Integrated - United States industry gained 8%. Zacks, October 22, 2026 The same note shows the revisions behind the label: the current-quarter consensus is $2.86 a share, up 77.6% year over year and revised up 17.9% in 30 days; the full-year estimate is $11.19, up 81.7%; the next-year estimate is $10.69, down 4.5%; and Zacks assigns Rank #1 (Strong Buy) with a Value Style Score of B. The last reported quarter printed revenue of $19.52 billion, up 32.4%, and EPS of $3.24 against $1.42 a year earlier — beating consensus by 11.32% and 9.46%. Our own price file, which ends October 2, shows the longer arc: the stock fell 21.2% in Q2 ($132.00 on March 31 to $103.96 on June 30), then rose 21.9% to $126.75 at October 2 — 10.2% below the 252-day high close of $141.22 (September 15, 2026) and 48.0% above the low close of $85.66 (November 6, 2025).

The Tape

For ConocoPhillips, the one hundred and sixty-fifth Filing Tape audit, the tape shows 11 tracked managers whose verified continuing positions fell 8.4%, a full market that added 98,611,454 shares across 81 fewer filers, an insider record with two purchases against fifteen sales, no congressional row in either chamber, a 5% register that is entirely passive SC 13G paper, and a borrow of 1.34% of a measured share count that has eased since June.

Lens 1 — the superinvestors: eleven holders, two of them 71.5% of the stake. The collection holds 147 managers (144 at June 30; 3 early filers at September 30). The June 30, 2026 register is 11 distinct managers holding 45,658,257 shares worth $4,746,629,158, long only, with no option rows. The largest is Eagle Capital Management, 17,477,615 shares, 38.3% of the cohort, at a 5.55% weight, labelled DECREASED at −7.6%. Behind it sit Bill Nygren - Oakmark Funds (15,178,673 shares, 33.2%, DECREASED −12.9%), Dodge & Cox Funds (9,266,284 shares, DECREASED −3.9%), Christopher Davis - Davis Advisors (1,877,583 shares, INCREASED +0.1%) and Yacktman Asset Management (1,606,025 shares, INCREASED +1.5%), with six smaller holders below 131,000 shares each — seven decreases, four increases, no new position. Every label verifies under both pairing methods: the eleven held 49,833,973 shares at March 31 and 45,658,257 at June 30, a verified change of −8.4% (−4,175,716 shares), in a quarter when the price fell 21.2%. One tracked manager exited: Steven Check - Check Capital Management, which had held 2,534 shares. No September early filer holds the name. The June cohort's implied price is $103.96, exactly the June 30 close. At 4.50% of reported institutional shares the cohort is a small sample of this register. 13F figures are as of June 30, 2026, published up to 45 days later.

ConocoPhillips through six filing lenses
Chart 1: Signal presence by cohort (n = 11 superinvestor common-stock holders among 147 managers, at Jun 30, 2026, long only; no option rows; 0 of 3 September 30, 2026 early filers holds this name). Superinvestors: 2026Q2 13F collection, as of Jun 30, 2026. Institutions: full-market 13F aggregation, Jun 30, 2026 (n = 2,467 filers). Insiders: Form 4 through Oct 2, 2026 (n = 119 filings in the parsed record, filed Jan 2, 2025 – Sep 16, 2026). Congress: PTR aggregates through Oct 3, 2026 (Senate through Oct 1, 2026); no row in either chamber. 13D/G: parsed filings through Apr 29, 2026 (n = 3 filings). Short interest: FINRA settlements through Sep 15, 2026 (n = 137 settlements, symbol COP only). Source: SEC EDGAR; FINRA; GetCoattail collections.

Lens 2 — institutions: 81 fewer filers, 98.6 million more shares. At June 30, 2026, 2,467 institutions reported positions on the name's single CUSIP, down 81 from 2,548 at March 31 (−3.18%); 2,462 are long. Reported shares rose 10.76% to 1,015,147,073 (+98,611,454 shares), while reported value fell 12.40% to $100,869,311,771, labelled "reported" because the aggregate includes option rows (methodology). The aggregate implies $99.36 against the $103.96 close (−4.42%). The share count is the cleaner measure: a tenth more stock reported by a smaller crowd, in the same quarter the tracked cohort cut 8.4% and the price fell 21.2%. The value fell because the quarter-end price fell further than the share count rose.

Lens 3 — insiders: two purchases on the whole record, and the CEO is the largest seller. The parsed Form 4 record holds 119 filings (January 2, 2025 – September 16, 2026), inside windows running through October 2, 2026. The last 90 days (a filing-date window, per the aggregate's own definition) hold 6 filings, no purchase-coded rows and two sale-coded rows totalling 24,487 shares and $3,299,893.05: Kelly Brunetti Rose, senior vice president and general counsel, sold 15,000 shares, and Andrew D. Lundquist, a senior vice president, sold 9,487 shares — both officer rows, transacted August 20–21, 2026 and filed August 21–24, 2026. The last year holds 1 purchase-coded row and 15 sale-coded rows: the purchase is William H. McRaven, a reporting person who is not an officer in the filing, buying 5,768.35 shares for $500,000.09 on November 10, 2025, and the sales total 1,284,549 shares worth $145,849,371.51 across eight sellers, 13 of the 15 rows officer rows. The largest seller is Ryan Michael Lance, chairman and CEO, with three sales totalling 1,120,729 shares — 500,708 shares on December 19, 2025, 506,800 on March 20, 2026 and 113,221 on March 31, 2026. The full parsed record holds exactly one more purchase — Kirk L. Johnson, an executive vice president, buying 5,300 shares on June 16, 2025 — and no sale outside the last year: 2 purchases and 15 sales in all, stated with that record's span.

Lens 4 — Congress: no row. The combined aggregate (as of October 3, 2026) carries no row for this ticker, and neither do the House aggregate, the Senate aggregate, the House member file or the Senate member file. There is nothing to split by party, chamber or direction: as collected, this lens is blank, reported as blank rather than estimated.

Lens 5 — the 5% register: entirely passive, three prints. Our full parse holds 3 SC 13D/G filings: 1 SC 13G and 2 SC 13G/A amendments, and no SC 13D at all, carrying 3 reporter rows from 3 reporting entities. The register maximum as printed is Vanguard Capital Management, 91,896,696 shares and 7.52%, in an SC 13G filed April 29, 2026 as of March 31, 2026 — a share count that is 7.65% of the 1,201,337,479 shares in our fundamentals file, so the percentage and the count sit in the same range on this name. BlackRock, Inc. prints 85,107,015 shares and 6.7% as of June 30, 2025. The Vanguard Group prints 0 shares and 0.0% as of March 13, 2026, while Vanguard Capital Management prints again at March 31, 2026. The latest filing is the April 29, 2026 Vanguard Capital Management print above.

Lens 6 — short interest: 1.34% of a measured share count, easing since June. The latest FINRA settlement, September 15, 2026, records 16,065,330 shares sold short at 2.77 days to cover, 1.34% of the share count in our fundamentals file (a measured period-end count, methodology). The borrow fell 4.17% from the prior settlement, sits 16.2% below the June 30, 2026 settlement (19,181,879 shares) and 11.9% above the year-ago settlement (14,362,910 shares). The series maximum is 49,882,293 shares at January 15, 2021 — the first settlement in the series, followed immediately by a step to 0.344x at the next settlement — and the latest reading sits 67.8% below it; within the last year the maximum is 27,894,997 shares at May 15, 2026, and the latest sits 42.4% below that. The series minimum is 8,722,918 shares at June 30, 2023. The summer's path: 19,181,879 (June 30), 20,698,828 (July 15), 18,512,066 (July 31), 16,864,931 (August 14), 16,764,745 (August 31), 16,065,330 (September 15) — one rise after the June snapshot, then four settlements down.

Short interest in ConocoPhillips
Chart 2: Shares sold short in ConocoPhillips at each FINRA biweekly settlement, Jan 15, 2021 – Sep 15, 2026 (n = 137 settlements, symbol COP only; the issuer-name field reads "ConocoPhillips" throughout, on a single market class, NYSE). The series maximum is 49,882,293 shares at Jan 15, 2021, the first settlement in the series, and the latest settlement, 16,065,330 shares at Sep 15, 2026, sits 67.8% below that maximum and 16.2% below the Jun 30, 2026 settlement. The series minimum is 8,722,918 shares at Jun 30, 2023; one settlement steps to one-half or less of the prior settlement (0.344x, at Jan 29, 2021) and none steps to 2x or more, and five rows carry a FINRA revision flag. The Gap

The search story is a Strong Buy label on a rising tape: Rank #1, the current-quarter estimate revised up 17.9% in a month, and a stock up 13.7% over the same month. The filings underneath describe the quarter before that rise, and they point the other way at the top of the register. In Q2, when the price fell 21.2%, the tracked cohort cut a verified 8.4% — seven of eleven holders decreased, led by Oakmark's −12.9% and Eagle's −7.6% — while the full market reported 10.76% more shares on 81 fewer filers, a consolidation the tracked names did not join. Since June the price has recovered 21.9%, and the borrow has eased 16.2% from its June 30 settlement. Congress has not touched the name in any aggregate we hold. The 5% register is passive paper only, its largest print dated March 2026. And the insider record leans one way at scale: two purchases totalling $999,472.09 against fifteen sales totalling $145,849,371.51, with the chairman and CEO alone selling 1,120,729 shares. One plausible reading is that the October search interest is an estimates argument about a name after a round trip — down 21.2%, then up 21.9% — while the record shows the broad market adding shares during the fall, tracked holders trimming into it, insiders selling at a scale the two purchases do not approach, and nobody in the filings chasing the recovery yet.
