GetCoattail Research — The Filing Tape #132. Chevron has been one of the most-watched stocks on a major stock screen this month, and the filings describe a register dominated by one holder who stood still: 18 of the 147 superinvestors hold the stock, totalling 92,840,210 shares, and Warren Buffett - Berkshire Hathaway alone holds 84,375,856 of them — 90.9% of the tracked stake, labelled UNCHANGED — while the verified cohort cut 6.6% in a quarter when the price fell 19.9%, the full market added 15.48% more shares, insiders have recorded no purchase in the entire parsed record against 81 sales, and short interest sits 69.1% below its series peak.
The Hype
Chevron's attention this week is a screen story. The stock is one of the names Zacks.com singled out as most watched by its visitors lately — the subject of an October 16, 2026 Zacks trending-stock note. Zacks Our price file shows why the round trip drew eyes: Chevron fell 19.9% in the second quarter, from $206.90 on March 31 to $165.76 on June 30, then recovered 24.7% to close at $206.69 on October 2 — up 35.6% year to date and 34.8% above its close a year earlier, and 5.1% below the 252-session closing high of $217.77 set on September 15, 2026. A most-watched slot on a stock that fell by a fifth and then took it back: the filings answer who held it at the June snapshot — the bottom of that fall — and whether the tracked money added, held or cut.
The Tape
For Chevron, the tape shows an 18-name register with no period split, one holder at 90.9% who did not move, a verified cohort down 6.6% while the broad market added shares on a falling price, no insider purchase in 138 filings against 81 sales, two Congress purchases, a passive 5% register headed by 7.5%, and a borrow far below its 2025 peak.

Lens 1 — the superinvestors: 18 holders, one of them 90.9%, and a verified cohort down 6.6%. We track 149 managers whose 13F portfolios we collect from SEC EDGAR — 147 are in the collection, all at a June 30 period-end for this name, with no September early filer holding it. At June 30, 2026, 18 holders total 92,840,210 shares worth $15,392,187,726, long only, with no option rows: 9 labelled DECREASED, 5 UNCHANGED and 4 INCREASED. Warren Buffett - Berkshire Hathaway is the largest holder: 84,375,856 shares worth $13,986,141,890 — 90.9% of the tracked stake — at a 4.67% portfolio weight, labelled UNCHANGED (filed August 14, 2026). The second holder, GQG Partners, holds 4,321,814 shares (4.7%, 1.33% weight, labelled DECREASED -57.9%), so the top two hold 95.5% — 88,697,670 shares. The rest of the register is small beside them: ACR Alpine Capital Research (2,780,991 shares, 6.54% weight, INCREASED +1.2%), DJE Kapital (711,208, DECREASED -44.3%), Dodge & Cox Funds (202,503), Torray Funds (135,300), Guinness Asset Management (89,288), Tortoise Capital Advisors (76,874), Mairs & Power Funds (41,147), Atalanta Sosnoff Capital (37,284, DECREASED -58.5%), John Rogers - Ariel Investments (34,626), Harry Burn - Sound Shore (13,475, INCREASED +36.7%), Christopher Bloomstran - Semper Augustus (6,063), Arnold Van Den Berg - Century Management (4,592), W.H. Reaves & Co. (3,416), Thomas Russo - Gardner Russo & Quinn (2,470), Kahn Brothers Group (1,953) and Bill Nygren - Oakmark Funds (1,350). The change verifies row by row for all 18 continuing holders under two register methods that agree exactly (methodology): 99,387,236 shares at March 31 and 92,840,210 at June 30 (-6,547,026 shares, -6.6%). Three managers exited in the quarter, together 8,527 first-quarter shares, so the full register reconciles in both quarters (methodology). Seventeen of the 18 rows imply exactly $165.76, the June 30 close; DJE Kapital implies $169.97. 13F figures are as of June 30, 2026, published up to 45 days later.
Lens 2 — institutions: 121 fewer filers, a sixth more shares on a falling price. At June 30, 2026, 4,123 institutions reported positions, down 121 from 4,244 at March 31 (-2.85%); 4,118 are long. Reported shares rose 15.48%, from 1,255,255,678 to 1,449,512,085 (+194,256,407 shares), while reported value fell 6.82% to $240,501,852,146, labelled "reported" because the aggregate includes option rows (methodology), in a quarter when the price fell 19.9%. The reported value implies $165.92 against a June 30 close of $165.76 (+0.10%).
Lens 3 — insiders: no purchase in the entire parsed record, against 81 sales. The parsed Form 4 record holds 138 filings through October 2, 2026, and it contains no purchase transaction at all — the count is zero in the 90-day window, the one-year window and the full record, and the officer-purchase count is zero in every window too. Sales are the whole of this lens. The last 90 days hold 14 sales: 1,166,626 shares for $228,595,178.54, by 5 sellers, across 9 filings. The one-year window holds 78 sales for $636,806,842.08 (9 sellers), and the full record holds 81 sales for $698,228,981.21 (9 sellers). Every window's implied sale price sits inside its range on our file — 90-day $195.95, one-year $182.31, full-record $179.89 — so all windows' counts and totals are cited.
Lens 4 — Congress: two members, two purchases, no sale. The combined record (as of October 3, 2026) carries two members, with 2 purchases and 0 sales, the latest dated July 2, 2026, both recorded as Republican. The House aggregate carries one (1 purchase, latest June 15, 2026) and the Senate aggregate (as of October 1, 2026) the other (1 purchase, latest July 2, 2026). The aggregates record counts and dates, not amounts, so that is the whole of this lens.
Lens 5 — the 5% register: 4 filings, every one of them passive, maximum 7.5%. Our full parse holds 4 SC 13D/G filings matching the site aggregate — 0 SC 13D family and 4 SC 13G family (2 SC 13G, 2 SC 13G/A); 2 amendments, 9 reporter names across 9 reporter rows. The maximum is 7.5%: STATE STREET CORPORATION printed 152,617,711 shares at 7.5% as of September 30, 2025 (filed November 10, 2025, SC 13G). Vanguard Capital Management printed 141,217,561 shares at 7.07% as of March 31, 2026 (filed April 29, 2026, SC 13G). The register's latest filing is the Berkshire Hathaway group at 84,375,856 shares and 4.2% as of March 31, 2026 (filed May 15, 2026, SC 13G/A) — the same count the tracked collection records at June 30. The remaining print is The Vanguard Group at 0 shares and 0.0% as of March 13, 2026 (filed March 26, 2026, SC 13G/A). The 573,918,196-share total counts reporter rows across dates, not distinct stakes.
Lens 6 — short interest: near the low end of its recent range, at 1.05% of the share count. The latest FINRA settlement, September 15, 2026, records 20,765,075 shares sold short — 1.05% of the 1,975,771,274 shares outstanding — at 2.61 days to cover, up 0.87% from the prior settlement (20,585,159 on August 31, 2026). The series peak across all 137 settlements is 67,129,093 shares on May 15, 2025, so the latest reading sits 69.1% below it; against June 30, 2026 (18,851,523) the latest is up 10.2%, and against a year ago (19,596,345 on September 15, 2025) up 6.0%. The recent path is mixed: 18,851,523 (June 30), 20,366,208 (July 15), 20,250,198 (July 31), 15,741,465 (August 14), 20,585,159 (August 31) and 20,765,075 (September 15) — ending with two rises after a sharp August 14 dip. The series contains one single-settlement step below half, in July 2025 (methodology).
The Gap
The narrative arriving this week is a trending-screen story: one of the most-watched names on Zacks.com, on a stock that fell 19.9% in a quarter and then recovered 24.7%. The June tape backs neither a rush in nor a rush out. The broad market added shares — 15.48% more, even as filers fell by 121 — but the tracked cohort's verified register fell 6.6% between the same 18 holders, with nine decreases against four increases, three small exits, and the 90.9% holder not moving a share. Inside the company, the record holds no purchase at all — not in 90 days, not in a year, not in the entire 138-filing parse — against 81 sales, $228,595,178.54 of them in the last 90 days. The 5% register holds four passive prints; its maximum is a 7.5% State Street print as of September 2025, and its latest is the Berkshire Hathaway group's own 4.2% — the same 84,375,856 shares. The borrow is quiet: 1.05% of the share count, 69.1% below its May 2025 peak. One plausible reading is that the price fall was absorbed by broad-market accumulation while the tracked register trimmed around an immovable centre and shorts stayed away; the trending slot measures attention, and no lens shows the tracked money chasing it.
What Would Change the Picture
Nothing above is a recommendation. These filings would change it:
- 1. The 2026Q3 13F season (filing window closing mid-November 2026). No tracked holder has yet filed at September 30 for this name. Whether Berkshire Hathaway's 84,375,856-share position — 90.9% of the June stake, unchanged in Q2 — moves at all, and whether the verified -6.6% continues or reverses after the 24.7% recovery, decides whether this lens stays centred on one still holder.
- 2. A first insider purchase. The record holds 0 purchases in 138 filings — every window, officer purchases included — against 81 sales. A first recorded purchase, at any size, would change this lens.
- 3. A third Congress member, or a first recorded sale. Two members account for the entire Congress lens, with two purchases and no sale. A transaction from any other member — or a first sale by either — would change this lens.
- 4. A first SC 13D filing, or a new 5% print above 7.5%. All four filings here are 13G-family. A first activist-form filing, or any print above STATE STREET CORPORATION's 7.5% maximum, would change this lens.
- 5. Short interest through the May 2025 peak, or back below the August dip. The borrow stands at 20,765,075 shares, 69.1% below the series peak of 67,129,093 and at 1.05% of the share count. A reading above 67,129,093 would set a new series record; a fall back below 15,741,465 (August 14, 2026) would unwind the two-settlement rebuild.

Methodology and data notes
- As-of & limits: The lenses rest on different clocks, none live: 13F is a June 30, 2026 snapshot published up to 45 days later (no tracked holder of this name has an early September 30, 2026 filing in the collection); Form 4 runs through October 2, 2026; Congress aggregates run through October 3, 2026 (Senate through October 1, 2026); 13D/G through May 15, 2026; short interest through September 15, 2026; the price file ends October 2, 2026. Five limits are specific to this audit. First, the roster expanded before the recent audits — from 85 managers (83 filing) to 149 (147 filing) — so "of 147" counts are not comparable to earlier pieces' "of 83" figures. Second, this name carries no period split: all 18 tracked holders sit on a June 30, 2026 period-end, and the collection contains no September 30 holder of this name, so the 18-holder total is a single-date figure. Third, the tracked stake is concentrated to a degree the headline count understates: one holder is 90.9% of it and the top two are 95.5%, so cohort totals move only when Berkshire Hathaway moves — in this quarter it did not, and the verified -6.6% is entirely the other 17 continuing holders' net change; the three exits (8,527 first-quarter shares) sit outside that continuing-holder change and are recorded separately. Fourth, the short-interest series contains one single-settlement step below half — July 31, 2025 printed 18,661,705 shares against 58,145,891 on July 15, 2025, a ratio of 0.321x — with no split or revision flag on that row and no corresponding single-day price move in our file; the series peak (May 15, 2025) predates that step, so peak comparisons cross it, and this audit reports the step rather than smoothing it. Fifth, our price file begins June 1, 2021, so every price statement in this audit is mechanical, a date and a close from that file; the file's split list is empty. The Zacks trending-stock note (October 16, 2026) postdates the 13F snapshot and the short-interest series; it is known to this audit only from outside coverage, not from our own files, and none of its figures are cited here beyond the most-watched listing itself, reported as screen content in The Hype; every price figure here is from our own price file.
- Superinvestor lens: 147 managers in the collection (of a 149-manager roster, all at a June 30, 2026 period-end for this name) collected directly from SEC EDGAR Form 13F (managers_13f collection, regenerated October 15, 2026 for the expanded roster); Chevron positions are counted on the single CUSIP 166764100, long rows only, and there are no option rows for this name in the collection. Eighteen distinct managers hold long positions at June 30, 2026, totalling 92,840,210 shares worth $15,392,187,726. The direction count is 9 DECREASED, 5 UNCHANGED and 4 INCREASED, with no new holder; three managers exited (First Pacific Advisors, Steven Check - Check Capital Management and Saturna Capital, 8,527 first-quarter shares combined). Berkshire Hathaway's share of the stake is 90.9% = 84,375,856 / 92,840,210; GQG Partners' is 4.7% = 4,321,814 / 92,840,210; the top two together are 95.5%. All 18 continuing holders verify row by row against the first quarter under two methods that agree exactly — the generic filing-agent-prefix pairing and the corrected accession-identity / CUSIP-overlap pairing — so the verified continuing total is 99,387,236 shares at March 31 moving to 92,840,210 at June 30 (-6.6%), with no unverified holder. The pipeline register totals reconcile in both quarters: 21 rows and 99,395,763 shares in the first quarter, equalling the verified continuing total plus the three exits (99,387,236 + 8,527); 18 rows and 92,840,210 shares in the second, equalling the June cohort exactly — a register change of -6.6%. Implied per-share value: 17 of the 18 rows imply exactly $165.76, the June 30, 2026 close (the exception is DJE Kapital at $169.97), so the cohort implied price is $165.79, +0.02% against the close.
- Full-market lens: SEC Form 13F Data Sets full-market aggregation. The primary table is the full13f collection's by-ticker file (holders = distinct filers reporting the ticker's CUSIP; 4,118 reported long positions out of 4,123 filers). Chevron carries a single CUSIP in this aggregation (166764100), and the backfill fixtures' by-CUSIP row matches the by-ticker row exactly on every field — holders, long holders, shares, reported value, prior holders and prior reported value. The by-ticker file's entered/exited fields (2,013 and 2,134, a net of -121 that matches the change in holder count) are gross flows, so this audit headlines the net change. Reported-value caution: the aggregate value ($240,501,852,146 over 1,449,512,085 shares) implies $165.92 per share against a June 30, 2026 close of $165.76 in our price file, a gap of +0.10% — printed here as found. The aggregate sums the VALUE of every information-table row — including put and call option rows — while the share count covers long common-stock rows only, so we headline filer and share counts and label dollar values "reported."
- Insider lens: Form 4 full parse (agg_by_ticker, as of October 2, 2026) is the basis here; the site's insider aggregate (90-day window) agrees with the full parse exactly for this name — 0 purchases, 14 sales, $228,595,178.54, 5 sellers — so no disagreement needs stating. Implied sale prices: 90-day sales $195.95 (window closes $168.10–$217.77), one-year sales $182.31 (window closes $146.75–$217.77), full-record sales $179.89 (full-file closes $94.29–$217.77) — every implied price inside its window's range. There is no purchase implied price in any window, because there is no purchase transaction in any window.
