RESEARCH — THE FILING TAPE #134

Two of 147: One Holder Is 99.1% of the Tracked Zoom Stake — Rubric's Verified Position Rose 176.3% in a Quarter When the Price Rose 7.4%, and Insiders Have Never Bought a Share

October 20, 2026

GetCoattail Research — The Filing Tape #134. Zoom surfaced on a meme-stock watch list this week with mentions up 190%, and the filings show a tracked register of just two names: 2 of the 147 superinvestors held the stock at June 30, 2026, and one of them — Rubric Capital Management, with a verified increase of 176.3% — is 99.1% of the tracked stake. Insiders have never bought a share in the parsed record, Congress has no recorded transaction in any aggregate, and the borrow sits 63.0% below its 2023 peak.

The Hype

Zoom's attention this week is a mention spike, not a price move. The stock appears on AltIndex's meme-stocks list — a live ranking built from social-media mention volume — where Zoom Communications sits in the list's upper tier with 29 mentions, a 190% jump in mentions, and a "Bullish" community-sentiment tag, on a list updated October 19, 2026. AltIndex Our own price file shows a quieter tape underneath: the stock rose 7.4% in the second quarter, from $80.39 on March 31 to $86.31 on June 30, and closed at $92.88 on October 2 — up 7.6% year to date, but still 17.0% below the last 252 sessions' highest close, $111.88 on June 2, 2026. A near-tripling of mentions on a stock that has moved in single digits: the question the filings can answer is who was actually holding it, and in what size, while the chatter built.

The Tape

For Zoom — the one hundred and thirty-fourth Filing Tape audit — the tape shows a two-name tracked register in which one holder is effectively the whole cohort, a broad market that added filers and shares, an insider record with no purchase against 232 sales, a Congress lens that is entirely blank, a six-filing passive 5% register whose maximum is a restructured Vanguard print, and a borrow that has traded in a narrow band all year.

Lens 1 — the superinvestors: two June holders, and one of them is 99.1% of the stake. We track 149 managers whose 13F portfolios we collect from SEC EDGAR — 147 are in the collection (144 at a June 30 period-end, 3 early filers at September 30, none of them holding this name, so there is no period split) — and the June 30, 2026 register for the common stock (CUSIP 98980L101) is 2 distinct managers holding 2,790,805 shares worth $240,874,380, long only, with no option rows and no debt rows: 1 labelled INCREASED and 1 NEW, with no exits. Rubric Capital Management is the register: 2,766,009 shares worth $238,734,237 — 99.1% of the tracked stake — at a 2.19% portfolio weight, labelled INCREASED +176.3%. The label verifies exactly under two register methods that agree (methodology): Rubric held 1,001,006 shares at March 31 and 2,766,009 at June 30 (+176.3% recomputed). The only other holder is Torray Funds, NEW with 24,796 shares worth $2,140,143 at a 0.29% weight — 0.9% of the tracked stake. The full register reconciles with no residual: 1,001,006 shares at March 31 (the verified continuing position alone; there were no exits) moving to 2,790,805 at June 30, a register change of +178.8% once Torray's new position is added. Both rows imply $86.31, exactly the June 30 close. 13F figures are as of June 30, 2026, published up to 45 days later.

Zoom through six filing lenses
Chart 1: Signal presence by cohort (n = 2 superinvestor holders among 147 managers, at Jun 30, 2026, long only; no option rows; no September 30, 2026 early filer holds this name). Superinvestors: 2026Q2 13F collection, as of Jun 30, 2026. Institutions: full-market 13F aggregation, Jun 30, 2026 (n = 872 filers). Insiders: Form 4 through Oct 2, 2026 (n = 118 filings). Congress: PTR aggregates through Oct 3, 2026 (Senate through Oct 1, 2026) — no row in any aggregate. 13D/G: parsed filings through Jul 31, 2026 (n = 6 filings). Short interest: FINRA settlements through Sep 15, 2026 (n = 137 settlements, symbol ZM only). Source: SEC EDGAR; FINRA; GetCoattail collections.

Lens 2 — institutions: 63 more filers, and 19.28% more shares. At June 30, 2026, 872 institutions reported positions, up 63 from 809 at March 31 (+7.79%); 864 are long. Reported shares rose 19.28%, from 168,338,548 to 200,788,038 (+32,449,490 shares). Reported value rose 29.11% to $17,699,237,455, labelled "reported" because the aggregate includes option rows (methodology), in a quarter when the price itself rose 7.4%. Flow counts agree: 789 entered, 726 exited, net +63, and the by-CUSIP row matches the by-ticker row on every field. The reported value implies $88.15 against a June 30 close of $86.31 (+2.13%).

Lens 3 — insiders: no purchase in the entire parsed record, against 232 sales. The parsed Form 4 record holds 118 filings through October 2, 2026, and it contains no purchase transaction at all: the buy count is zero in the 90-day window, in the one-year window and across the full record. Sales run the other way. The last 90 days hold 34 sales: 138,137 shares for $13,043,249.88, by 5 sellers, 22 of the 34 officer sales. The one-year window holds 182 sales — 1,270,749 shares for $109,765,336.33, by 6 sellers — and the full record holds 232 sales for $174,793,858.13 (9 sellers, 154 of them officer sales). The implied sale prices sit inside their windows' price ranges on our file in every window ($94.42 over the last 90 days), so the share counts are cited for all three windows.

Lens 4 — Congress: none. This lens is blank in full: the combined aggregate (as of October 3, 2026), the House aggregate (as of October 3, 2026) and the Senate aggregate (as of October 1, 2026) each carry no row for this ticker. No member of either chamber has a recorded transaction in this name in the aggregates we collect, so there is nothing to count: the table prints "None" because the register itself is empty, not because the data is missing.

Lens 5 — the 5% register: 6 filings, every one of them passive, maximum 10.15%. Our full parse holds 6 SC 13D/G filings matching the site aggregate — 0 SC 13D family and 6 SC 13G family (2 SC 13G, 4 SC 13G/A); 4 amendments, 4 reporter names across 6 reporter rows. The maximum is 10.15%: The Vanguard Group printed 26,967,154 shares at 10.15% as of December 31, 2025 (filed January 7, 2026, SC 13G/A). The same reporter then printed 0 shares and 0.0% as of March 13, 2026 (filed March 27, 2026), and two successor Vanguard entities print in its place: Vanguard Capital Management at 13,809,722 shares and 5.19% and Vanguard Portfolio Management at 13,442,768 shares and 5.05%, both as of March 31, 2026. The register's latest filing is Vanguard Portfolio Management at 13,143,833 shares and 4.96% as of June 30, 2026 (filed July 31, 2026, SC 13G/A). The remaining print is BlackRock, Inc. at 17,464,094 shares and 6.7% as of December 31, 2024.

Lens 6 — short interest: a 2023 peak, a 2026 plateau. The latest FINRA settlement, September 15, 2026, records 7,058,003 shares sold short — 2.35% of the 300,503,787 shares outstanding — at 2.59 days to cover, down 1.03% from the prior settlement. The series peak is 19,090,666 shares on June 30, 2023, across all 137 settlements in the series, which begins January 15, 2021; the latest reading sits 63.0% below it. Against June 30, 2026 (7,153,280) the latest is down 1.3%; against a year ago (5,211,126 on September 15, 2025) it is up 35.4%. The recent path barely moves: 7,153,280 (June 30), 7,130,735 (July 15), 7,214,118 (July 31), 7,250,683 (August 14), 7,131,426 (August 31) and 7,058,003 (September 15) — three falls and two rises, every reading inside a band of roughly 7.0 to 7.3 million shares. The series carries no step of 2x or more in either direction, and no split flags, across its whole run (methodology).

Short interest in Zoom
Chart 2: Shares sold short in Zoom at each FINRA biweekly settlement, Jan 15, 2021 – Sep 15, 2026 (n = 137 settlements, symbol ZM only; the issuer-name field appears in two spellings — "Zoom Video Communications, Inc" through the Nov 15, 2024 settlement and "Zoom Communications, Inc. Clas" from Nov 29, 2024 — a corporate name change, with no overlapping or duplicated dates). The series maximum, 19,090,666 shares, was set Jun 30, 2023; the latest reading, 7,058,003 shares on Sep 15, 2026, sits 63.0% below it, 1.3% below the Jun 30, 2026 settlement of 7,153,280 and 35.4% above the year-ago settlement of 5,211,126. The series minimum is 4,901,189 shares (Sep 30, 2025). Source: FINRA Equity Short Interest files; GetCoattail collection (zm_short_interest_series.csv).

The Gap

The narrative arriving this week is a social one: mentions up 190%, a "Bullish" tag, a place on a meme-stock list. The June tape is narrower than the chatter. The broad market did add — 63 more filers and 19.28% more shares in a quarter when the price rose 7.4% — but the tracked register is two names, and one of them, Rubric, is 99.1% of it; strip out that single verified increase and the tracked cohort is a 24,796-share new position. Inside the company, the record holds no purchase ever against 232 sales, $13,043,249.88 of them in the last 90 days. Congress is absent entirely — not quiet, absent: no row in any of the three aggregates. The 5% register holds six passive prints, its 10.15% maximum a Vanguard Group position that the same complex has since re-printed as two entities of roughly 5% each. And the borrow has sat in the same narrow band all year, 63.0% below its 2023 peak. One plausible reading is that the mention spike landed on a stock whose recorded ownership barely changed hands in the quarter — one fund nearly tripling a position is a fact about one fund, and the filings show nothing broader arriving with the attention.

What Would Change the Picture

Nothing above is a recommendation. These filings would change it:

80% Overlap, No Copycat Signal: Congress vs. the Superinvestors
Four of five congressional stock buys land in a stock the superinvestors hold — 688 shared names. But ticker by ticker, how often Congress buys a stock has almost nothing to do with how many managers hold it (ρ = 0.099), and the shared names did not pay better.
