GetCoattail Research — The Filing Tape #106. RTX led a defense-watch roundup this week, and the filings describe a concentrated register: 10 of the 147 superinvestors we track hold the stock, one of them is 75.3% of the tracked stake, the full market barely moved in the same quarter, insiders recorded no open-market purchase in a year — one purchase in the entire parsed record — Congress has no row at all, and short interest stands at 1.01% of the share count, far below a flagged 2023 spike print.
The Hype
RTX's attention this week is a defense roundup. The stock led the title order of a StockTwits defense-watch article published on October 17, 2026, grouping it with AeroVironment and an Ondas–Palantir item under a counter-drone and defense-AI theme, and making it the highest-ranked name in that fresh list this series had not covered. In the roundup's own tally, RTX was up 0.16% week to date, and its 1.7% year-to-date gain was the cohort's only positive year-to-date figure. Our own price file tells a quieter version of the same story: the stock slipped 1.6% in the second quarter, from $192.90 on March 31 to $189.73 on June 30, stands up just 0.7% year to date through October 2, and its last close in our file is $184.68 on October 2 — down 2.7% since June 30 and 18.1% below the 252-session closing high of $225.49, set on August 18, 2026, though still 17.6% above the 252-session low of $157.00, set on October 15, 2025.
The Tape
For RTX — the one hundred and sixth Filing Tape audit — the tape shows a superinvestor cohort of ten names holding 46,636,760 shares, with a single holder at 75.3% of that stake, a full market that added 34 filers and 13.1 million shares in the same quarter, an insider record with no purchase in a year and exactly one purchase ever, a congressional lens with no row at all, three passive 5% filings headed by a 7.47% print, and a borrow at 1.01% of the shares outstanding.

Lens 1 — the superinvestors: ten holders, one of them three-quarters of the stake. We track 149 managers whose 13F portfolios we collect from SEC EDGAR — 147 are in the collection: 144 at a June 30 period-end, and 3 early filers at September 30. For this name there is no period mix and no option row: all ten holder rows sit at June 30, 2026, on the single CUSIP 75513E101, totalling 46,636,760 shares worth $8,848,392,549, long positions only. Dodge & Cox Funds is 75.3% of the cohort: 35,113,249 shares worth $6,662,036,733 — at a 3.49% portfolio weight, down 1.0% in the quarter. The second holder, Sanders Capital, holds 9,277,878 shares worth $1,760,291,793 — 19.9% of the cohort — at a 1.76% weight, down 1.4%; together the top two are 95.2% of the tracked stake. The quarter's only increase came from Lee Ainslie - Maverick Capital, up 13.6% to 1,550,533 shares at a 2.6% weight; the steepest trim was Atalanta Sosnoff Capital, down 39.6% to 440,257 shares. All ten continuing holders verify row by row against the first quarter, moving from 47,229,838 shares at March 31 to 46,636,760 at June 30 (-593,078 shares, -1.3%), with no new holder. Two tracked managers exited: David Tepper - Appaloosa Management (342,000 shares in the first quarter) and Steven Check - Check Capital Management (3,489). Every holder row implies exactly $189.73, the June 30 close. 13F figures are as of June 30, 2026; funds have up to 45 days to file, so this is the complete second-quarter picture — a lagging one.
Lens 2 — institutions: a broad register that barely moved. At June 30, 2026, 3,410 institutions reported positions, up 34 from 3,376 at March 31 (+1.01%); 3,401 of them are long. Reported shares rose 1.24%, from 1,057,230,987 to 1,070,342,119, while reported value slipped 0.41% to $201,817,354,612, labelled "reported" because the aggregate includes option rows (see methodology). That value implies $188.55 per share against a June 30 close of $189.73, a gap of -0.62% — small for this aggregate, and printed here because the series records it either way.
Lens 3 — insiders: no purchase in a year, one purchase ever. The parsed Form 4 record holds 85 filings through October 2, 2026. The last 90 days hold no purchase transaction and 6 sale transactions: 31,517 shares for $6,862,402.98, by 4 sellers, 5 of them officer sales, across 5 filings. The one-year window holds no purchase transaction at all against 21 sales: 204,890 shares for $41,779,868.02, by 9 sellers, 19 of them officer sales, across 42 filings. Across the full record, the purchase side is a single transaction: 1 purchase of 200 shares for $23,580, by 1 buyer, and not an officer purchase, against 40 sales totalling 490,160 shares for $79,881,665.53, by 11 sellers. Every window prices inside its own range: the 90-day sales imply $217.74 per share, inside the 90-day close range of $184.68 to $225.49; the one-year sales imply $203.91, inside the one-year range of $157.00 to $225.49; and the full-record sales imply $162.97 and the single purchase $117.90, inside the full-period range — so this audit cites dollar totals for every window (see methodology).
Lens 4 — Congress: no row in any aggregate. The combined record (as of October 3, 2026), the House aggregate (as of October 3, 2026) and the Senate aggregate (as of October 1, 2026) each carry no row at all for this name. There is no congressional purchase or sale in this lens to date anything by; the lens is blank rather than estimated, and it is the only blank lens in this audit.
Lens 5 — the 5% register: three filings, all passive, headed by a Vanguard print at 7.47%. Our full parse holds 3 SC 13D/G filings matching the site aggregate exactly — 1 SC 13G and 2 SC 13G/A filings, 2 of them amendments, across 3 reporter names, and no 13D filing at all. The register maximum is 7.47%: Vanguard Capital Management reports 100,563,387 shares as of March 31, 2026, filed April 30, 2026 as SC 13G. The latest filing is a Capital Research Global Investors SC 13G/A, filed May 14, 2026 as of March 31, 2026, reporting 52,377,687 shares (3.9%); The Vanguard Group filed an SC 13G/A reporting 0 shares (0.0%) as of March 13, 2026, filed March 27, 2026 — a change of reporting entity inside one fund family, recorded exactly as filed. The cross-date reported total of 152,941,074 shares counts reporter rows across filings and dates, not distinct stakes.
Lens 6 — short interest: 1.01% of the share count, with a flagged spike in the series. The latest FINRA settlement, September 15, 2026, records 13,642,843 shares sold short — 1.01% of the 1,347,758,144 shares outstanding — at 3.80 days to cover, up 10.55% from the prior settlement (12,341,124 on August 31, 2026) and down 15.3% from the June 30, 2026 reading of 16,114,183. The series maximum is not a recent reading: the file prints 111,453,944 shares on October 31, 2023, after a single-settlement jump from 7,776,823 on October 13, 2023 — a step this audit reports as filed and flags in the methodology. The latest reading sits 87.8% below that print.
The Gap
The narrative arriving this week is a theme story: counter-drone orders and defense AI, with RTX at the head of the roundup and the cohort's only positive year-to-date figure in that tally. The filings describe the register that story lands on. Ten of 147 tracked managers hold the name, and the cohort is top-heavy — Dodge & Cox Funds alone is 75.3% of the stake and the top two holders are 95.2% — while the verified continuing total eased 1.3% in the second quarter and two managers exited. The full market, by contrast, is as broad as registers get — 3,410 filers — and it barely moved: filers up 1.01%, shares up 1.24%, reported value down 0.41%. Insiders have recorded no open-market purchase in a year, and exactly one purchase — 200 shares — in the entire parsed record, against 40 sales. Congress has no row in any aggregate. The 5% register is three passive prints whose maximum is dated March 31, 2026, and the borrow stands at 13,642,843 shares — 1.01% of the share count, with the series' one violent print now almost three years old. One plausible reading is that October's theme argument is happening over a register where the tracked money is concentrated in essentially one large holder, the broad market is wide but static, and neither insiders nor Congress appear in the record at all — a tape that neither confirms the theme story nor argues with it, because its loudest fact is concentration, not direction.
What Would Change the Picture
Nothing above is a recommendation. It is a record. These filings would change it:
- 1. The 2026Q3 13Fs (filing window closing mid-November 2026). The holder rows here sit on a June 30 period-end, before the stock's August high and autumn drift played out in the position reports; the September 30 filings are the first read on positioning since. Whether Dodge & Cox Funds' 35,113,249-share position — 75.3% of the cohort — is still there decides whether this lens reads as concentrated or rebuilt, and whether the two second-quarter exits (342,000 and 3,489 shares in the first quarter) are followed by more.
- 2. A first insider purchase in over a year. The record holds no purchase transaction in the one-year window and exactly one — 200 shares — in the full parsed record of 85 filings. Any open-market purchase, by any insider, would be this lens's first buy-side fact in the covered windows.
- 3. A first congressional row. The combined, House and Senate aggregates carry no row for this name. Any recorded transaction, in either chamber and in either direction, would be this lens's first fact of any kind.
- 4. A fresh 5% print. The register's newest filing is dated May 14, 2026 (Capital Research Global Investors as of March 31, 2026), and its maximum — Vanguard Capital Management at 7.47% — is dated March 31, 2026. A new filing moving either figure, or a first 13D, would be this lens's first change of substance since spring.
- 5. Short interest back through the June 30 reading, or below 12 million shares. The borrow stands at 13,642,843 shares, up 10.55% in the latest settlement and 15.3% below the June 30, 2026 level of 16,114,183. A reading above 16,114,183 would reverse the summer's decline; a reading below 12,000,000 would undercut the recent range entirely.

Methodology and data notes
- As-of & limits: The lenses rest on different clocks, none live: 13F is a June 30, 2026 snapshot published up to 45 days later; Form 4 runs through October 2, 2026; Congress aggregates run through October 3, 2026 (Senate through October 1, 2026); 13D/G through May 14, 2026; short interest through September 15, 2026; the price file ends October 2, 2026. Five limits are specific to this audit. First, the roster expanded before the recent audits — from 85 managers (83 filing) to 149 (147 filing) — so "of 147" counts are not comparable to earlier pieces' "of 83" figures. Second, every 13F figure here predates this month's defense roundup; the first post-period 13F picture is the September 30 season. Third, the congressional lens is empty for this name: no aggregate carries a row, so no congressional figure exists to cite. Fourth, the short-interest series contains a single-settlement discontinuity in the source file (see the short-interest note below); this audit reports the series as filed and does not smooth, drop or adjust the affected prints. Fifth, this week's roundup (October 17, 2026) postdates every lens here; the roundup is known to this audit only from outside coverage, not from our own files.
- Superinvestor lens: 147 managers in the collection (of a 149-manager roster; 144 at a June 30, 2026 period-end and 3 early filers at September 30, 2026) collected directly from SEC EDGAR Form 13F (managers_13f collection, regenerated October 15, 2026 for the expanded roster); RTX positions are counted on the single CUSIP 75513E101 only, long rows only, and there are no option rows for this name in the collection. Ten distinct managers hold long positions, all at June 30, 2026, totalling 46,636,760 shares worth $8,848,392,549 — no period mix. The direction count is 6 DECREASED, 1 INCREASED and 3 UNCHANGED. Dodge & Cox Funds' share is 75.3% = 35,113,249 / 46,636,760; Sanders Capital's is 19.9% = 9,277,878 / 46,636,760. All ten continuing holders verify row by row against the first quarter under the rule used in the previous audits — a holder's first-quarter row accepted only when it sits under the same filing-agent prefix as the manager's second-quarter accession and its implied shares-change reproduces the EDGAR shares-change label at one decimal place — so the verified continuing total is 47,229,838 shares at March 31 moving to 46,636,760 at June 30 (-1.3%), with no unverified continuing holder and no new holder. First-quarter rows: Dodge & Cox Funds 35,473,379; Sanders Capital 9,407,278; Lee Ainslie - Maverick Capital 1,364,888; Atalanta Sosnoff Capital 729,273; Thomas Gayner - Markel Group 224,000; Jensen Investment Management 17,607; Mairs & Power Funds 8,562; Hillman Capital Management 1,975; Torray Funds 1,689; Saturna Capital 1,187. Two tracked managers exited in the second quarter: David Tepper - Appaloosa Management (342,000 shares in the first quarter) and Steven Check - Check Capital Management (3,489 shares). Implied per-share value: every holder row implies exactly $189.73, the June 30, 2026 close, so the cohort implied price is $189.73 with no filer anomaly. The pipeline register totals match the collection for this name in both quarters (10 rows and 46,636,760 shares in the second quarter; 12 rows and 47,575,327 shares in the first — the first-quarter register total equals the verified continuing total plus the two exits, 47,229,838 + 345,489).
- Full-market lens: SEC Form 13F Data Sets full-market aggregation. The primary table is the full13f collection's by-ticker file (holders = distinct filers reporting the ticker's CUSIP; 3,401 reported long positions out of 3,410 filers). RTX carries a single CUSIP in this aggregation (75513E101), and the backfill fixtures' by-CUSIP row for it matches the by-ticker row on every field — holders, long holders, shares, reported value, prior holders and prior reported value — exactly. The by-ticker file's entered/exited fields (2,037 and 2,003, a net of +34 that matches the change in holder count) are gross flows, so this audit headlines the net change. Reported-value caution: the aggregate value ($201,817,354,612 over 1,070,342,119 shares) implies $188.55 per share against a June 30, 2026 close of $189.73 in our price file, a gap of -0.62% — printed here as found. The aggregate sums the VALUE of every information-table row — including put and call option rows — while the share count covers long common-stock rows only, so we headline filer and share counts and label dollar values "reported."
- Insider lens: full-parse Form 4 aggregation (agg_by_ticker), record as of October 2, 2026 (85 filings). Sale and purchase counts are transaction-code counts (S and P) in non-derivative rows; grants and exercises are not counted as purchases, and one filing can contain many transaction rows. The 90-day window (July 5 to October 2, 2026) holds 0 purchase transactions and 6 sale transactions (31,517 shares, $6,862,402.98, 0 buyers, 4 sellers, 5 officer sale transactions) across 5 filings. The one-year window (October 3, 2025 to October 2, 2026) holds 0 purchase transactions and 21 sale transactions (204,890 shares, $41,779,868.02, 0 buyers, 9 sellers, 19 officer sale transactions) across 42 filings. The full record holds 1 purchase transaction (200 shares, $23,580, 1 buyer, 0 officer purchase transactions) and 40 sale transactions (490,160 shares, $79,881,665.53, 11 sellers, 38 officer sale transactions). The site's insider aggregate (90-day window, as of October 17, 2026) carries this name and matches the full parse's 90-day window exactly on sale transactions, sellers and sale value. Window price checks on our price file: the 90-day sales imply $217.74 per share, inside the 90-day close range ($184.68 to $225.49); the one-year sales imply $203.91, inside the one-year close range ($157.00 to $225.49); and the full-record sales imply $162.97 and the single purchase implies $117.90, inside the price file's full-period close range ($69.38 to $225.49) — so dollar totals are cited for every window.
- 13D/G lens: full-parse SC 13D/G parsed filings (3 filings matching issuer CIK 101829 on CUSIP 75513E101: 1 SC 13G and 2 SC 13G/A, 2 of them amendments, no SC 13D), filings through May 14, 2026. The site aggregation carries this name under a ticker-keyed row; that row (3 filings, 0 D-filings, 3 G-filings, 2 amendments, 3 reporters, latest date May 14, 2026, maximum 7.47%, total reported 152,941,074 shares) matches the parsed filings on filings, form mix, amendments, latest date, maximum and the cross-date reported total. The total sums reporter rows across filings and dates, so it is a filing-volume total, not a stake. The rows are reported as filed, under the names exactly as they appear: Vanguard Capital Management printing 100,563,387 shares at 7.47% as of March 31, 2026, filed April 30, 2026 as SC 13G (the register maximum); Capital Research Global Investors printing 52,377,687 shares at 3.9% as of March 31, 2026, filed May 14, 2026 as SC 13G/A; and The Vanguard Group printing 0 shares at 0.0% as of March 13, 2026, filed March 27, 2026 as SC 13G/A. The parsed coverage for this issuer holds these 3 filings; a 5% holder that has not filed in the covered window would not appear here.
- Congress lens: Senate PTR archive and House PTR archive as maintained on this site. The combined record (as of October 3, 2026), the House aggregate (as of October 3, 2026) and the Senate aggregate (as of October 1, 2026) each carry no row for this name. No figure is printed for this lens because there is no aggregate row to print; the absence is recorded here and in the lens table rather than filled with a zero, since a missing row and a row of zeros are different statements about the underlying archives.
- Short interest lens: FINRA Equity Short Interest files (biweekly settlement dates), collected directly from FINRA's public distribution. The published series covers all 137 settlements under the symbol from January 15, 2021 (12,436,575 shares) to September 15, 2026. Every settlement row under the symbol is this issuer's row, under two historical issuer names in the files — "Raytheon Technologies Corporat" (the file's truncated form) on the 61 earliest settlements and "RTX Corporation" on the 76 later ones; the issuer renamed, and both name forms are included, with no other-issuer rows under the symbol. The latest reading is 13,642,843 shares on September 15, 2026, up 10.55% from the prior settlement (12,341,124 on August 31, 2026), at 3.80 days to cover. Series discontinuity, reported as filed: the settlement of October 31, 2023 prints 111,453,944 shares — the series maximum — immediately after 7,776,823 on October 13, 2023, a single-step ratio of 14.332 (the source file's own change field for that settlement reads +1,333.16%, and the following settlement carries a revision flag); the elevated prints then decay through 2024, reaching 17,282,499 by June 28, 2024. This audit does not smooth, drop or rebase those prints; the "87.8% below the series maximum" figure in the text is arithmetic on the file as published, and readers comparing across the October 2023 step should treat the two stretches as the file presents them. The series minimum is 6,425,023 shares on September 30, 2022. The recent path runs 16,114,183 (June 30), 17,070,096 (July 15), 18,052,174 (July 31), 12,947,889 (August 14), 12,341,124 (August 31) and 13,642,843 (September 15). FINRA publishes each settlement about two weeks after the fact, so the October price action is not yet in this series. The share-count ratio (1.01%) uses the fundamentals file's shares-outstanding figure below.
- Fundamentals note: our fundamentals collection carries RTX's net income of $6,732,000,000 and assets of $171,079,000,000, each labelled fiscal 2025 in the file. The file also carries a revenue figure of $80,738,000,000, but it labels that figure fiscal 2024 — an earlier vintage than the other fields — so this audit does not present it as a current-year figure. The file is marked ok for this name, with no missing fields: shares outstanding of 1,347,758,144 (sourced in the file to the shares-outstanding count as of June 30, 2026) and a file-computed market value of $247,030,581,165.09. The file does not flag the issuer as a foreign private issuer, and it carries SIC 3724, Aircraft Engines & Engine Parts, and a NYSE listing. The file's price for the name is $183.29 as of October 6, 2026; our daily-close file ends October 2, 2026 at $184.68, and we keep the two files' figures separate rather than blending them.
- Prices: our own daily-close file for RTX through October 2, 2026 ($184.68 close, +0.7% year to date on that file; the 252-session closing high is $225.49 on August 18, 2026, so the last close sits 18.1% below it; the 252-session closing low is $157.00 on October 15, 2025, so the last close sits 17.6% above it; closes of $192.90 at March 31, 2026 and $189.73 at June 30, 2026, a second-quarter change of -1.6%; change from June 30 to October 2 of -2.7%; change from the September 30, 2025 close of $167.33 of +10.4%; the December 31, 2025 close is $183.40). The series in our price file begins June 1, 2021 at $88.99 and holds 1,342 rows; the file's full-period close range is $69.38 to $225.49.
- Market context sources: the StockTwits defense-watch article published October 17, 2026, which placed RTX first in its title order ahead of AeroVironment and an Ondas–Palantir item, and whose cohort tally put RTX up 0.16% week to date and up 1.7% year to date — the cohort's only positive year-to-date figure in that tally. The year-to-date figure in our own price file (+0.7% through October 2, 2026) covers a different window from a different source and is reported separately above. Figures we could not confirm were left out; the external items above are reported speech from that outlet, not GetCoattail measurements.
